Black screen on launch

So, I bought the base game through Steam without the expansions. Installed fine, ran fine, no issues.

Liked the game enough that I bought Stormblood since it was on sale over the weekend. Now I can't play at all, the game starts, shows the SE logo, and then hangs on a black screen until I close it down. However, if I hit the X to close the game, the normal prompt comes up and asks if I want to exit FFXIV. Even does the little chime.


Here's a list of things I've already tried:

• Reinstalled the game (twice)
• Updated graphics drivers
• Turned DirectX11 off
• Deleted the settings folder in Documents
• Reinstalled Steam (because why not?)
• Turned Discord overlay off
• Cleared IE cache and settings (that was a solution someone else had for the launcher)
• Switched on Compatibility Mode
• Edited the .cfg file to turn off full screen mode
• Edited the .cfg file to turn off intro cinematic
• Edited the .cfg file to turn off/on version checking

At this point I'm at a loss. It worked fine until I applied the expansion. Any ideas?

How long have you been experiencing the issues? In the most above you mention you upgraded something on the computer? What exactly was upgraded and could you provide a system report? Simply go to the 'Config' option on the Final Fantasy XIV launcher and to the right of 'System Information' click on 'Display.'

There is no error message at all. It's not really a crash. The game starts normally, I see the SquareEnix logo, and then the screen is just black.

This is a laptop, correct? If so open the Nvidia Control Panel and going to 'Manage 3D Settings'. From here, select 'Program Settings' and select Final Fantasy XIV. You should see an option to select the GPU. Make sure it's set to your dedicated graphics card (it may be set to 'Auto' by default).

You may also want to do a clean boot. Simply open the task manager and select the 'Start up' tab. Disable everything here and restart the PC. This will make sure that no background processes are interfering with the game. Make sure to keep any overlays you might use (discord overlay, Geforce Experience, etc.) disabled when you start up the game.

As the problem started after upgrading to Stormblood, maybeyour game doesn't/didn't install the expansion: So to exclude that, how big is your FFXIV folder currently? Mine is ~36 GB with both expansions installed.
