I'm still new myself, but I can say that the ilvl 255 kinna weapon from Palace of the Dead is easy to get. I'm not even lv 60 yet, and I have it waiting for me. It's a bit of a grind, but not so much when you consider that any comparable weapon will take far longer to get or luck in content you won't be able to reach until your overall ilvl meets entry requirements. I found PotD enjoyable, particularly with the fun little treasures along the way and still visit it often even though I don't need to. I'm looking forward to hitting lv 60 with one of the best weapons in the game waiting for me in my inventory. The EXP from PotD is nice as well, and would be wasted on a lv 60 job, so I believe it's a grind best done while leveling to take full advantage.
Even if you don't go all the way to floor 100 for kinna, there is still the ilvl 235 padjali you can get at floor 50 with 30/30 aetherpool. You could knock that out in 5 hours or so.
Well, with the Level 50 Job Quests now giving ilvl90 gear, you're pretty well set on gear up through the rest of ARR.
Best recommendation I'd have is to make sure you unlock all the side dungeons that you aren't directed to in the MSQ, so that you'll unlock the Level 50 Duty Roulette. An excellent source of experience for leveling up to 60, and then some bonus end-game currency once you have hit 60.
Unlock the dungeons for the level 50 Roulette. There's quite a few of them (17). Use the tomes you get in the process to pick up some Ironworks or Augmented Ironworks gear. Although the ilvl 90 you get from your job quests is passable, the ilvl 120 or 130 you can get with tomes will serve you better.
That was the most functionally useful part of my advice, but there's plenty of optional stuff at 50, too:
I think it's cool to do at least the initial quest for the first stage of the level 50 Relic. This really isn't needed gear-wise, but it's a fairly interesting and varied quest that gives you a cool looking weapon and a unique job-specific title. Of course, you could come back and do this later if you'd rather move ahead towards Heavensward first.
If you want a break from the serious story of the main scenario to check out a more comic side story, check out the Hildibrand questline.
For other features that open up at 50: Be sure to unlock glamour if you haven't yet. And if you're also a Second Lieutenant or above in your GC, you'll now have access to housing. (I don't know what the availability is on your server for plots for an actual personal house, but if those are hard to come by, you could also get an apartment, or if your FC has a house, you could get a personal room.)
I would do the Hard modes of Ifrit, Garuda, and Titan. Although they may have been considered hard back then, nowadays everyone outgears them tremendously (in fact, the Main Scenario quest rewards have been updated so you will too!) so nothing should be a true threat. They're just fun to see and they may be used in the story later on. I also agree with the poster above me about Hildibrand.
Other than that, no, just continue and enjoy. Anything you come across, you can do on your own time at your own pace.
Hildibrand, Hard modes, EX primals (People run them regularly thanks to wt and love new people thanks to the bonus it gives them) and Coil are a few I can think of...
Oh, And the Crystal Tower raids.

I've done the Hildebrand questline, and managed to move on to Heavensward after a week's worth of gameplay. Still got some dungeons to complete for the level 50 dungeon roulette but still got around to doing the Crystal Tower and most of the Coils with my FC (we stopped at the mechanical hydra looking boss from the final Coil I believe).
