Yes, if those are your motivations, don't do it. It's not worth the work.
On the other hand, you just want to make gobs of gil and put in your time for it.. Then by all means, it'll take you a few weeks to level every class to level 50 from scratch gathering and what not.. Then another few weeks to get geared up to full, but after that it does pay off rather well. If you're not willing to put in months of work into it, just ask a friend to craft the gear for ya.
