I have a G-SYNC monitor. Fullscreen is not activating G-SYNC.

EDIT: Issue resolved. Quick solution: Reinstalled the game (back up settings first!)


Hello! A couple of weeks ago I decided I would finally get a screen for myself designed for PC applications. I managed to obtain an ASUS PG278Q ROG Swift monitor. One of its features is that in games set to exclusive fullscreen mode, the monitor activates its G-SYNC variable refresh rate technology.

It lets me know it's doing this by changing its power indicator LED from white to red. It isn't doing so for my FFXIV:ARR client. I'm quite sure I have the game set to Fullscreen mode, and not Borderless Windowed mode. The in-game resolution is set to the monitor's native resolution.

I've tried activating G-SYNC on all of my other games, and they work with it. Is there something I'm missing in the game's settings for getting my FFXIV:ARR client to use a true fullscreen mode with exclusive buffer so that G-SYNC can kick in?

Not all titles are compatible with gsync, and those that are not have a profile in the driver that prevents it being enabled.

I've heard about this, but that doesn't diminish my desire to want to hack up a solution to get it working anyways!

What I'm suspecting is that the client's dedicated fullscreen mode isn't actually fully "dedicated", to the point where it takes zero time to Alt+Tab my way out to switch to a different task. I may not be using the correct vocabulary for this, but essentially I don't see a difference between fullscreen and Borderless Windowed mode. This may or may not have anything do with with other modifications I have on various things on my system, and I'm probably going to see if resetting my game settings and reinstalling the game helps out with anything.

Kind of a niche first-world problems complaint, I know, but I wish there were more people who could take a look at what G-SYNC is about--I feel it's really important in MMOs where frame rate can fluctuate a whole lot depending on how many characters are in a duty, a raid, or a Hunt or city-state's market area.



EDIT: Reinstalling the game and settings worked! Now playing the game in Amazing Nvidia Variable Refresh Frequency Paradise.

Whats it like to run around in mor'dhona or fates, hunts, etc. with Gsync? Does it feel all smooth even when you drop down to around 40 FPS? I'm very interested in that monitor too specifically for FFXIV. Its TN though...not sure if I can cope with that coming from a AH-IPS panel. Whats your opinion about the viewing angles and color shift when you don't look straight on it?

Gsync has a minimal refresh of 30hz, so anything below 30fps will have frames repeated and appear laggy.

Thats alright. With my current CPU/GPU setup i'm at a steady 60 FPS with occasional drops to 40-45 (crowded places, hunts, fates). Its almost always a CPU limitation. I don't want 144Hz though I would keep the target framerate at 60 FPS and have Gsync doing its job whenever it goes below that.

My biggest gripe is still the TN panel, I read a lot of reviews of the ASUS Monitor and all gave it a top rating but there were always the words for-a-TN-its-good when they talked about image quality so not sure how good this panel really is compared to IPS.

Frame dips are nice and smooth. Heavily populated areas are now much more pleasant to walk into, and often I don't even notice the frames have slowed down until a brightly-colored character walks directly perpendicular in front of me to cause the ever-so slight motion blur one gets from 40 FPS. Before, I could feel the game hiccup as each and every character loaded up on model detail as soon as they got close. The same goes for dungeon intro cutscenes. The camera moves around the duty area a lot, and objects popping up quickly can really put a damper on a monitor that requires a steady frame rate. Not a problem anymore!

I've only started working on an IPS panel recently for a few hours per sitting, so take this with salt: for playing an MMO with good visuals, the colors are just fine. I run the client with SweetFX because I am addicted to bloom and color contrast, and it's exciting. I'm not entirely sold on needing wider viewing angles when I'm the only user of the monitor, and I don't notice color shift unless I'm falling left or right out of my chair, or facerolling my keyboard somehow looking up at the display. I did notice a very tiny degredation in color quality when I tried ARR in G-SYNC's alternative ULMB backlight strobing mode. That special mode is quite obviously still geared for twitch 360 no-scoping, as its extremely subtle blur-reduction trade-off doesn't make a noticeable difference in this game.

For anyone reading this thread, it is highly advised that you pack some serious graphics processing if you want to run ARR at 2560x1440 resolution. Even with my GTX 780, it's not practical for me to absolutely turn up all the extra detail (Maximum setting in the options), and even less practical if I want to keep the game at smooth, sweet frame rates around 80 or so. I, too, am looking forward to the release of the DX11 client. I know my Ivy Bridge CPU, which already runs hot overclocked, could use more of a break from all that work in DX9. Hope it looks good and runs fast!

Thanks that sounds very promising. I have a NEC PA272W at the moment and will most likely go for the ASUS now. I'm not sure if I keep both in dual screen mode I need to try out my normal work with the ASUS. I didn't get SweetFX working btw but I think I read on Guru3D forums its a problem with Windows 8.1. FFXIV would crash right away with it.
