Reduced to 1 Retainer?

A few days ago I decided to fire a retainer and hire a new one. Which I proceeded to do with no problems at all. Today I decided I wanted to fire my other original retainer, so I did. But now the Retainer Vocate is telling me my max number of retainers is only one. Now, I've never paid to have extra retainers, but I've had the standard two retainers for a few months now. So, I'm a bit confused at only being allowd one now. Is this some sort of penalty for firingmy first two retainers? Or is this something I should talk to Square Enix about?
