Summoner - The whining needs to stop.

I'm really getting tired of people complaining when I spread my DoTs. For those who know how to really use the class, Summoners can put out a lot of DPS. If you add up all of the DoTs affecting multiple mobs and then factor in the Pet, it's quite impressive. Against a single target, however, it's less than staggering.

But I'm constantly being asked to focus on a single target by Tanks that don't know how to maintain aggro on more than 1 mob or healers that don't know they have more than 1 healing spell at their disposal.

Now you should know that I've seen things from their perspective. I've also run Scholar as the healer and I've leveled a Marauder. I've been in several parties that spread DPS. While this did cause me to be more "on my toes" it was far from impossible or even that difficult.

Obviously there are going to be SOME exceptions to this but can we just get some better players and less whiners?

I agree with you Kage. When the summoner is able to spread dots, it allows the non-focused mobs to be killed quicker. And on the matter of tanks having trouble holding aggro, a lot of that goes on tanks knowing their skills. I have seen a tank in lvl 50ish gear hold my whm aggro better than tanks in ak/dl. This is with a full dl/+1 whm and delaying heals, and using low aggro heals. Some of the skills tanks use to hold aggro should be rewritten to better describe how much hate they generate.

Not disagreeing that those types of tanks are stupid, but I will note, that's a fallacy. Summoners are among the highest single target dps in the game.

The AoE potential is just gravy.

SMN can also tank some of these farm-able dungeons with a few adjustment to your party play style. Your healer can cast stoneskin, regen, cure, esuna/leeches to the avatar and treat it as a real tank. So basically you will end up with 3 DPS + healer :) Try it out, but make sure you bring someone who can sleep the adds when dealing with trash mobs.

when I was doing longstop,the tanks were just learning how too mark and I remembered being told also too not use bane.
but doing ak runs if your a smn and your not using bane,prepare for people too ask whats up or flat out yell at you.

it's a low lvl/low experience thing and as soon as people get a few more dungeons under there belt it should stop.

p.s we have great single target dps.

It is almost completely impossible for a paladin (not sure about warriors) to hold sustained max AoE (esp with thunder Dotting as well) vs a relic+1 summoner.

The damage numbers are just too high.

So...I mean, people need to remember that they're working in a team here.

You are not the best dps in the world, you aren't proving anything by baning all the time.

If your tank wants you to stop, stop! What do you get by antagonizing your group lol. The point is to get through whatever run you're doing, and especially new tanks or pug tanks or people you haven't worked with all have their own idea of how they want to play the game.

So yes, the whining does need to stop, and it is YOUR whining.

Your team is a team. Work with them. If you're refusing to cooperate, you are the problem, regardless of how fast or how much damage you think you do.

When I enter a dungeon using DF, I say that I will be spreading dots. I don't know if the tank knows smn abilities or if he/she may have forgotten. If I see that the tank is having alot of trouble (Relic+1) then I stop doing it.

I don't complain when I occasionally get aggro and I haven't had any tanks complain that they sometimes have to get one off me.

In a party that I spread dots, if there are 3, the third mob is dead or almost dead when we get to it.

Bottom line is that one of the reason I love being a SMN is bane.

It goes beyond Summoner to both of the Arcanist jobs. I would offer supporting DPS on my Scholar which while not quite on par with a Summoner really isn't far behind. I'd have my DoTs ticking around on multiple targets & we'd have things half dead by the time the first target dropped. In the end it resulted in far less healing required and far faster runs.

THANKFULLY, I was with a tank while leveling that understood how the arcanist jobs work & took efforts to hold AoE aggro properly.

Obviously there are times when you don't want to hit the Bane switch -- most specifically when you have a Black Mage with you. If someone wants to CC a dungeon & glide through on easy mode, then by all means be my guest. I can happily stick with single target attacks.

Uhh. they can flash more.

Most pug tanks I see flash, once, and think that's OK.


I have no guilt about pulling off of them every time until they learn you need to flash more than once.

The issue isn't SMN themselves when maintaining hate, it's when we get a SMN spammin DoTs and a single target hitting DPS. You're going to lose hate on a mob, either the SMN takes one or the DPS does, it is very difficult to swap fast enough to keep hate on all mobs. This is not an issue with 2-pack pulls, the issue start when it's 3 or more. This is especially true if the SMN or DPS or both outgear the tank in question.

Flash isn't as potent as you seem to believe.
