There's no conspiracy. There is no way to replace the battery without making your token lose sync with the clock on the time server when it was made. If you replace the battery, the token will no longer work.To have to buy another is just another way for SE to get more money out of me and everyone else who bought one
SE DID NOT MAKE THE SECURITY TOKEN. THEY CONTRACT WITH A THIRD PARTY COMPANY TO MAKE THEM. The EXACT same token is used in world of warcraft.
My token has lasted since the first day I recieved it. It's battery is not even low yet.
They are not a bad idea. Yes, they have a limitation, but it's an impossible to avoid limitation. It's no different than replacing the battery in your watch, except there's no way to reset it to the exact timestamp from when it was manufactured. The security token does improve security, and normally needing to replace it once every few years (and having plenty of warning that it's dying so you can remove it from the account) is a very, very small price to pay.Stocking on these security dongles are a very bad idea
When you factor in shipping and the token itself, SE is really not exactly raking money in with them. It is a genuine security tool offered to help protect the consumer who fears his account might be in danger of compromise.
You could take it apart and replace the batter if you want. But then your one time passwords would always be wrong. You don't seem to understand how the token works.u think a battery cover or a way to change them would have been an easy solution for their devoted patrons.
