Infinite delay on initial melee attack

This is a very rare occurance, but sometimes I'm engaging a sleeping monster (like crawlers showing the zzz animation), only to find that I'm not attacking at all. I can run circles around the enemy, disengage, engage, run out of melee range, back in again, nothing will work. Only when the enemy attacks me, is it possible to attack again. Spells, ranged attacks and abilities will work, so they can be used to break through the problem, as will party members attacking the mob.
    Platform: PC
    ISP: Online
    Type of Internet Connection: DLS
    Internet Connection Speed: 10Mbit/s
    Date & Time: various times
    Frequency: Very rare
    Character Name: Kristal
    Race: HumeF
    World: Bismarck
    Main Job: RDM
    Support Job:SCH
Area and Coordinates: Abyssea - Attohwa
Party or Solo: Party and solo
    NPC Name: None
Monster Name: Ignis Eruca (unagrod, while 'sleeping' at night)
    Steps:
    1. Issue the menu command to attack the sleeping Ignis Eruca.
    2. Run into melee range if needed.
    3. Watch as the initial attack is never occuring. Circling the mob is possible.
3a. Party members in the vicinity are still running around and attacking other enemies, and connection is 100%.
3b. All menu commands are responsive, engage/disengage are possible, as are spell casting and ability use.
    4. Use an offensive action other then standard attack.
    5. Regular melee attacks are now occuring again.

This happens when the enemy location isn't being detected within melee range normally a height issue. You see the mob in front of you and can walk right up to it but it's position isn't identified correctly.

Shouldn't you then get an "out of range" message?

The crawler was indeed on an incline, but I could still circle it while locked on. The mob didn't warp around when I cast Paralyze II on it. And I never got an "out of range" message.
