If you make something very challenging, 95% of the playerbase won't be able to do it.
If you make something somewhat challenging, you won't weed out the "abyssea noobs" you are worried about in most cases, but you will weed out a hell of a lot of people who levelled "legitimately".
Bear in mind, if you make something properly challenging, a lot of the people who will be weeded out are those who complain about the "Abyssea noobs", because a large proportion are people who are only good at exping etc. Be careful what you wish for.
I actually agree with everything here.Sounds fun but would completely kick casual players because xp is the only thing they can do. The idea is good for gear grinding, but not all the gear obviously. You could imagine a weekly bcnm against a pretty hard mob then the person that kills the most of him or kills it the fastest would earn a defending ring or another great item (or just a chance at it). At least it would give a reason to farm good gear.
