    DO NOT!~~~~~

Buy the new expansion from Steam, it will break your working version of FFXI.

I bought the new expansion set from Steam last night, got my codes in correctly and logged in on the working FFXI. I let Steam D/L its FFXI over night. This morning I came in to play and boom....My working version of FFXI WONT START! Next step, check the version that steam d/l'd. Its a fresh install with a nice 8 hour update attached with it. At the moment, I am currently moving a copy of the game from another computer that I dual box with and going to do an install with these files. I hope to Jeebus that this works.

I cannot explain how this happened but I do know from the Alla forums, I am not the only victim of this. Just in case you were thinking of getting your new set from Steam, DONT.

Why would you let steam download the game AGAIN when you already have the exact same thing on your HDD?

What kept you from getting the updated version of the game from Square Enix themselves?

That have that Direct2Download (or whatever its called, I know its D2D) from playonline.com that you can get, probably cheaper, and doesn't require the whole "8 hour update" because what you are downloading is the current version of the game.

HDD - PS2. I play on PC. Anyway, all I did is DL the item. I didn't even start it. The first time I started it was when I could not access my current version of FF.

Didn't buy it twice. I never had the scenarios or Abby. All I had were the 4 main expansions.

You know, you just wasted your money. That "8 hour update" was downloading the scenarios and Abyssea themselves, along with upgraded armor and such. What you bought from Steam was probably a 2005-2007 copy of FFXI.

So you're saying your computer doesn't possess a HDD (or SSD)? Steam treats the items the exact same way, because they're the exact same game. The data for the Abyssea content was already on your computer, all you needed were the registration codes to input to your account to tell the game that you have paid for the content.

I only got the update because I went through Steam to buy the stuff. All I needed was the Reg. Code for the new content that I didn't have. It was working on my version last night. This morning, it would not start. SO, I opened the copy that steam gave me, which yes, is prolly an old copy. I wouldn't have had to do the update had steam not cancelled out my working version of the game.

I did not buy the new expansion pack, BUT I have used steam for a long time, and my current version of ffxi is through steam.

Steam has a default option to automatically download uninstalled games. It won't recognize another version of FFXI that didn't come through steam.

For those buying it through steam make sure you have that option turned off before buying it. once you do buy it double check in your list of games that it isn't actually d/l the game.
