I think the reason the marbles are actual items is because the winnings are actual items; that is to say, the marbles take up the space in which the winnings would go, as proof that you have the space to receive the winning.
Of course not all 10 of your marbles are likely to win...

I remind you - you allready got 240 inventory and 220 storage. That's plenty of space.
So please learn to keep enough space ready for a random event that would require 10 inventory spaces for a short periode of time.
