Gamepad not recognized in FFXI config (Win7) +mouse

Argh, decide to come back yesterday to be denied because of all day maintenance, now my PS2 controller and USB adapter aren't being recognized, I can't win.

I used to play FFXI on my WinXP machines, never had a problem with the controller. When I tried to set up my gamepad on the Win7 computer, FFXI config won't recognize it. We have another set of PS2 and adapters, so I tried those as well. No luck.

It's working fine when I use it for FFXIV.

    Reading around online, I've tried:

-Enabling/disabling the gamepad several times in hopes it will recognize it.
    -Analog button on and off
-Different options on and off (slider, hat, vibration, etc)
-There's no fancy software installed for the controller, just runs on plug-n-play (Not that the adapter even came with software).

I was considering to go out and get a proper PC controller, but at different boards, they have the same problem with Logitech, Xbox360 controllers, etc.

FFXI official site suggests the Logitech Rumblepad 2, but it's not available to buy.

Another problem I noticed, I can't click objects with my mouse. Tried to click doors or the moogle. Won't recognize them. That I'm not sure what to even try. But I wouldn't mind it so much if I could get the gamepad to work.

    Thanks for reading!

Sounds like it could be a problem with the DirectInput side of your DirectX install. Might want to grab the offline install files for DirectX 8.1 and 9.0C and run them. There was a problem back in Vista where some support files for the pre DX10 releases were not there, and were causing issues with older DX games. May have carried over into Win7 as well.

If you go to the MS Downloads pages for each version of DirectX, you well see a section towards the bottom about users who may not have an internet connection during install (or something like that). There will be a link to the full offline install file there.

Thanks, that sounds very logical! I already bought a new controller while I was out: the Logitech Gamepad F310. FFXI config thankfully recognizes it, except the two large shoulder buttons and the left and right analog pad. I'm going to test it when the server is up, and if it doesn't work, I'll definitely download the older DirectX!

Anyone know a sneaky way to downgrade DirectX? Windows refuses to do it, even with the internet yanked out. (New controller works, but I can't walk with the analog stick. I can't remove DirectX unless I want to reinstall Win7.

It thunks back to the older DirectX calls when needed. The problem is some older games would call for specific DLL's directly (or something like that) and they are not installed with the DX10 that is installed with the OS, so you have to run the install packages to put the DLL's on your drive and register them.
