This.
My Visa card is not a credit card, it's directly linked to my checking account and no charges will go through unless I actually have sufficient funds on my account. I.e. Debit Card. I've been using this since I started playing. Granted I'm not in the UK but I sincerely doubt things are different there.

This is how it works with a uk debit card.
You login to pol.
You go to services and support.
Go to Membership.
You put in your SE password and one time password in.
then go to Content ID Contract Extension.
Then you pick your Extension period for 1 month 2 month or 3 month.
And each time you need to go though all that again and again and again.
Now for a Credit card its take out of your account automatically.
(I don't want a Credit Card that's why I'm paying using a debit card.)
Now with a Direct Debt.
The money is taken out of your bank account automatically every month on a specified date.
You're dammed if you do and you're dammed if you don't
Wait, do you actually have to send a check to SE each month to play this game?
Am I understanding this right?
Edit: Or have to put money in your checking account to pay for this game?
I actually had to log off game to check this for myself, seeing as I use EU PoL too. I followed the steps up until where you see all your member information and there is a "Please select a category" menu at the bottom. And unless I'm completely and utterly blind, I see no "Content ID contract extension" option there.

That means there was a problem with your payment method. Under normal circmstances, you never, ever have to manually "extend" your contract (in fact, no such option exists- you cannot pay manually). No payment was taken out of the account and my account became inactive.
They likely will not see any reason to add non-card payment methods (other than possibly game cards via Crysta, but they would probably have to revamp playonline's backend systems to work with that) and in fact the lack of payment options is partially due to the design of playonline itself- it's about as easily modified as FFXI is (which isn't easy at all). In your case, there is basically no difference between a debit card transaction and a "direct debit" transaction other than the lack of a card itself- and what bank doesn't offer a debit card with checking accounts? Direct debit is no more safe and secure than the debit card.
(you can't ask for threads to be locked- threads will be locked if a moderator deems it appropriate- which it's not because this isn't off topic)
Well, on the NA client we don't have anything like that. We just put our payment info in and it just takes the fee out month by month. That's way preferable to having to remember to pay every couple months. I'm sorry, I didn't know the payment system was different for the EU client.
Japanese accounts using WebMoney work the same way, while using credit cards they are just auto-billed until you deactivate the Content IDs. WebMoney lets you pay up to three months at a time per Content ID, but once you pay you can't deactivate for the future months you have paid. It warns you about a week before the month ends that your Content IDs will deactivate if you don't pay more WebMoney, and the error even shows up, and in English, if using the NA client, telling you to log in with the Japanese client to pay the bill.
WebMoney is a gift card currency, like Nintendo Shop Points, or PSN Points, or Live Marketplace Points, that you can buy the card, charge your account, and pay for certain online services with, like FFXI and Crysta. It's Japan-only though, so it must be imported if you aren't in Japan and have a Japanese account, since you can't add a non-Japanese VISA or MasterCard anymore to Japanese accounts.
