But just think how many extra subscriptions they get from people who pay for three or six accounts specifically so they can go do that content alone.

Unfortunately areas like that have the party size minimum to limit the possibility of congestion issues on servers (really server) where it could be a problem, as there can only be so many instances.
Think about this logically.
FFXI has no real instancing tech, it has zones (aka it cannot create duplicated of zones as needed as new mmorpg can)
The rarity of and difficulty of obtaining things directly impact the price of those things to sell.
Dyna D and Vagary are extremely difficult content, most players will be able to do nothing in there solo anyway except maybe kill 1-2 monsters and take 30 mins to do it.
So if they drop the 3 person entry limit:
You will fight and spam to enter, it will be spammed and permanently full (not only by actual players, but bots and rmt).
All money items from this content will crash in price to at least 1/4 of current prices due to oversupply.
Most people who go in there, will wipe and die over and over and be unable to do anything meaningufl anyway.
If you want to enter solo it's actually pretty easy. You just ask for 2 people to join, and they warp once you enter (you can either pay them some gil or do it for silver voucher entry).
The original type of battle areas, i.e. where we do BCNMs, you are correct- these are just a bunch of cloned bits of terrain placed out of shout range of each other. But for other content, including Ambuscade, Dynamis D, the WOTG battle areas, and anything that has the queue system attached to it, it's different. You see a message "connecting to server, please wait," these are actual instances, but there still can only be so many just as there are only so many BCNM arena copies within the original BCNM zones. Worlds in FFXI (and most modern MMOs since) are clusters of server machines linked together. it's not just one single server machine, that would not be able to handle the load of thousands of connections constantly downloading their character data etc. The auction house is on its own server machine as well.
Instances are just copies of the same thing, just like the several arenas within a BCNM area. It's just copies of the entire zone rather than copy pasted terrain within a zone.
