This is a gamble, and it doesn't always work, which is why I never list it as a given the way it is for Blue, Red and Pup (with a red or black frame). Chest drops are random, so it CAN work, but it's not something to depend on.
Yeah, the reason I didn't list blm (or scholar for that matter) in the above list is because their melee is so weak. When the mobs you fight all have several thousand HP it's very hard to tell if that little sliver on their health bar indicates 30 HP or 350, so targeting it with a specific damage type is hard. Granted, I would think a blm could-when they see that sliver-use exclusively break|Stun|Sleep to allow them to run in and melee the mob down, but woe be them if they get interrupted.
A player mentioned Ninja being able to do this (like a blm in reverse) meleeing it down and then getting Ninjitsu kills. I didn't list them for the same reason I didn't list blm; that health bar is hard to read. Couple that with how few nin I've met have botherred with the :San ninjitsu to get the highest damage from their ninjitsu and taking off that last little bit of Mob HP can be hard to target. But yes, in both cases it's possible.
Using ruby chests, it's theoretically possible for any job that can solo to get the light balance to start gettign TE chests (or gold for that matter), but it requires fast, steady kills and a hell of alot of luck. I wouldn't bother unless I had stones to burn. MUCH safer to join a party for a bit and help get their lights maxed, or even form a group of people who intend to solo but between them can get the lights. You can also /tell the mage soloers going after NMs and offer to help them max the physical lights while farming pop items, some of them will be willing to go for that, and it's good karma.
