Public Perception about XI and Lack of Console Version

    Greetings adventurers and Square-Enix.
I want to bring up something that I have been noticing a lot lately. When streaming XI, frequently I read comments that people think the game has been shutdown or dead. I educate them, but there also have been a lot of comments about the lack of a console version.

XI lives in the shadow of XIV. Marketing campaign and promotion was greatly applied to XIV for A Realm Reborn and was a large success. Even further than that, word of mouth has further promoted XIV with its free trial which basically became a meme. (BTW the Free Trial for XI is really not that great and 14 days is too short)

But what about marketing for XI? Well, the upcoming Vanadiel Raid "Echoes of Vanadiel" in XIV is a good start in raising awareness about Vanadiel and that it is still online after well over 20 years. I have been observing more new players join in on Asura. I run a social LS open to all adventurers. It's good to see more players check out XI and return to XI. Historically however, FFXI has not been promoted very often.

Response to the Trust System has been overall positive. I have brought more people back into the game by just showing them they don't have to wait days for a party anymore.

FFXI is where I started online gaming and my first MMORPG. I played on both PS2 and Xbox 360. My best memory of FFXI is my LS clearing Dynamis with me in Xbox Party chat. We finished all of Dynamis back then. I'm not sure why so many people think the game died with the console version shutdown. I would love to see Console make a comeback with achievements & trophies. I still have some of my achievements from the Xbox 360 version.

I am excited to see new changes for the Gamepad Configuration including Target Nearest NPC! Does it mean a new console version is coming? Maybe not, but a guy can dream.

    Wishlist with very low expectation:
+ Discounted/Bundled Subscription for FFXI & FFXIV together
+ Current gen console version (Xbox Series X, Playstation 5) with achievement support
    + Improved Free Trial
+ Make Gold World Passes easier
    + Cross-World travel (?)
    + Cross-World Party (?)
+ Finish the UI Overhaul that was started
+ Remove PlayOnline and allow direct launch to the server
+ Remake / Remaster XI (with character data carryover)

    Sincerely,
    Daynemog / Elanastoth
Returning Veteran, LS Leader, Longtime XI fan

Not to be a negative Nancy, but your wishlist sounds lot like 14 to me.

Maybe I'm just old and grumpy but I like the game as it is, of course I'd welcome new content and additions to the game but the realist in me as both a economic major and worked in the IT area for more than a decade says no.
A bundled sub would be welcomed, I'm sure. They keep saying its in the works for years so not sure where the blocker is, legal, infrastructure or processes.

I don't see SE ever publishing this version of the game on console again since they closed down the Xbox and PS servers. If they wanted they could probably port it but since the backend is still based off PS2 infrastructure, I'm guessing its a very resource and financial intensive process.

I wonder how wide spread it really is that people think the game is closed down though, I get the feeling it more coming from people that quit the game long before 2016, when the servers were closed down (since SE communicated that you can migrate to PC free of charge). I see new people joining on a weekly basis so.

I dont see why they cant invest in this game when they keep investing in flops that literally nobody plays.

I honestly get the feeling Square-Enix wants Final Fantasy to die, and want to create a new IP, but ... it keeps failing.

No matter how bad each new Final Fantasy gets, people support it. Then when the new one comes out they say the new one is bad, and the previous is good, when the previous didnt get better, the new one is just worse. Its not a good trend.

I personally stopped buying Final Fantasy after I played FFXV and FFVII-Remake.

    I didn't buy FFVII-Rebirth, or FF16, or FFXIV 6.0, or FFXIV 7.0.

Then they keep trying to make new IP's but no one wants them or likes them.

I say just hire developers that like and appreciate Final Fantasy, and let the company grow properly then they can create these side games.

Thats my opinion though, and also the logical one, but, its 2024 after all.

On a side note, I know if I was in Naoki Yoshida's position, FFXI and FFXIV would be making 2x if not significantly more than 2x their current profits.

Square Enix are not good at making games anymore and we all know it, they haven't made a good game for 10 years. They would kill to have the kind of player numbers they have for XI on any of the online games they made (foamstars is f2p and has nobody playing it), but they can't manage it. It's ironic that the games they should be investing in, they don't and instead spend money on games that keep on failing.

It's just the nature of modern public companies to be bad at the thing they exist for.
