Why is the video doubled horizontally, are they doing it as VR or something?
rebuilding FFXI on a modern engine would be so amazing, it's really a shame that they're content to just let it fade into obscurity.
ya, it's a 3D video, you're supposed to watch in VR. i had that same thought originally.
would rather have seen it 2D with left being vanilla, right unreal engine.
I've kind of always had this fear that, if they officially ported the game to a different engine, everything would look wrong animation-wise (something like FF14), but the video here definitely shows that it can be done right, too.
I'm not a fan of how characters look at you when you pass by, or how doors open automagically, but surprisingly to me, I think those are the only nitpicks I have so far.
...or so the legend says.
I really like the background music changing in different sections, though I wonder if there'd be a way to do a Tenshodo flavored mix of the Jeuno theme for that, just going straight to the Norg theme is a little much.
If this is a proof of concept, it's a pretty good one. The way the player character moves makes it still feel pretty close to current FFXI. Not sure what's up with the framerate drop when that Galka runs by though, that's concerning.
If it's an ongoing project with the intent of making something playable, though, don't post it here. Square's got a bad history with fan remakes, anyone remember the 3D remake of Chrono Trigger that got eaten by lawyers at like 90% complete? Better to not put it right where they can hypothetically see it, even if it feels like they're not paying attention.
Remaking ffxi in a modern engine would end up ruining the game.
It looks great, but it would reuire a lot of new content to make it worthwhile
The game was made in a different era, a remake would be made in the current one by totally different developers. They would ruin the game with modern video game norms.
A remaster would be similar, it would ruin the art style to appeal to a wider audience.
Companies very rarely are faithful and remakes and remasters are more likely to be worse than better.
There is a certain soul of the current game. Making it more HD is just FF14 IMO.
Modernizing the backend and getting rid of some of the cumbersome parts like POL integration, by all means.
For example, FF7R is hardly same game as the PS1 version. It's great and all they're remaking it, there is a fanbase for it but its not a 1:1 remake, they taking leaps in changing story elements and other parts that made FF7, FF7.
As someone who loved the original, the remake is a joke IMO. To each their own.
