That he chose to do this to Aegis is ultimately what makes it so obnoxious, Aegis is the most well known (even outside of FFXI) and culturally important items in the game bar none.

Aegis to FFXI is like Ashbringer to WoW.

Our brains value visual rarity, and we tend to link high status individuals to the things that it can be considered to help them be a high status individual. This is why designer clothing manufacturers give their products to or even pay high status people to wear or use their products. To use an example Nike to some sports star, or some high ticket clothes to some film star or singer.

When everyone has a Ferrari they become mundane and the link to some impressive individuals you can think of who drove one is watered down in the minds of people in the society.

Similarly if they add a login item that looks near identical to the most widely recognized REMA in the game (outside of close inspection) it vastly devalues the actual Aegis to the point players who used to wear it with pride will slowly start to lockstyle something else now. Which is very sad (btw I don't play Pld before someone thinks this is butthurt over me owning an Aegis, this is about the game that I care about and have been heavily involved with for 20 years).

When I see a paladin with an Aegis it's still triggers in me a some respect for the player wearing it because I associate the Aegis still with a Paladin that put a lot of effort into their character, and it imbues onto them the hard won respect from the best paladins in the game I've played with and seen in action over the years. From the main Paladin in my HNM shell that held Tiamat alone when the rest of us wiped from an mpk, to the Paladin in my first Dyna LS we all helped build an Aegis upon and felt communal pride in the accomplishment.

Very much as the lore of the Aegis states, wearing it does bestow onto you the prestige from other great paladins that wore it in the past in the minds of onlookers, that will 100% soon be gone now.

Aside from this he also chose to make this iconic REMA, that embodies many positives virtues into an item of mockery. So not only did he devalue it with mass production but he also flipped it from a high thought of prestige item into an object of ridicule.

These negatives gave what positives? A stupid joke item that will be funny for 5 minutes?

If you can consider a 20 year old video game to have cultural importance, what Fujito did to the community of the game he oversees is cultural vandalism and shows he has no respect for FFXI at all.
