Severe lag on Sheol: Gaol area only

    Platform: Windows

    ISP: Telia

Type of Internet Connection: CATV / Cable

Internet Connection Speed: 210 Mbps to local EU server, 18 Mbps to server located in Japan with 251ms ping

    Date & Time: Jan. 16 - 2021

Frequency: Always in specific area (reproduces every time)

    Character Name: Hikarushi

    Race: Mithra

    World: Ragnarok

    Main Job: Puppetmaster

    Support Job: Corsair

Area and Coordinates: Odyssey , Sheol: Gaol battle content

Party or Solo: Party of 1-6

    NPC Name: None

    Monster Name: None

    Steps:
    1. Location Rabao (no lag here).
    2. Enter Sheol: Gaol battle content from Rabao's Odyssey conflux (no lag or delay on entry).
    3. Character loads into Sheol: Gaol (severe lag on everything). Inventory takes extensive amount of time to fully load. Actions will not execute immediately when manually chosen from menu or used via macros, instead everything happens after 10 second delay. This severe delay on all actions persists whole Sheol: Gaol event and does not go away over time.
    4. After returning to Rabao from Sheol: Gaol, the lag experienced inside Sheol: Gaol event is gone immediately and no delay on any action is observed. Meaning that this particular issue is entirely Sheol: Gaol area specific. Noteworthy to also mention that several people have reported similar lag on Dynamis Divergence battle content, while I don't personally find Dynamis lagging anywhere near as bad as this new content does.

What is the status of this supposedly technical issue on Square Enix side and when can we expect solution to this problem?

As of 01-18-2021, despite applying the latest ffxi updates, Odyssey battle content Sheol: Gaol remains unplayable due to delayed server response.

Some supplemental info and observations regarding the issue..

    - Clicking the Pilgrim Moogle inside Sheol: Gaol causes a 5-10 second delay until the actual menu opens. Movement in the menu, after opening it, however remains immediate and fluid. But considering that the menu movement itself is entirely on player side and requires no server access, there's no surprise it doesn't lag at all. Leaving the menu and opening it again has no effect on this delay.

    - Attempting to move item from one inventory to another, for example from mog safe to inventory, causes quite a long, up to 10+ seconds delay before the item successfully moves into player inventory.

    - Changing player job using the Pilgrim Moogle causes player weapons and armors to change in delayed fashion. Creating odd effects, such as white mage wearing warrior armor and great axe visually. This issue corrects itself over time, but causes great confusion regarding changing player job within Sheol: Gaol. The job change animation itself is immediate and no delay happens on that, but animations themselves happen on player end with no server access required.

    - There is no delay on player movement itself that happens on computer screen. However any pets following the player will not immediately move alongside them. As puppetmaster, my pet would simply stand still once i started moving and it would take around 5-10 seconds until pet followed. If I kept running, pet would constantly cease to move and take another 5-10 seconds until chasing player again. Note that no "R0" happens here at all and connection remains stable. This exact same behavior is observer on trust characters following player and any enemy monsters. During those 5-10 seconds that the delayed server response happens it can be entirely possible for player to simply be defeated by monster, unable to do anything about the situation.

    - Clicking the veridical conflux within Sheol: Gaol likewise, as earlier mentioned regarding pilgrim moogle, causes a 5-10 second delay before the menu opens for choosing which boss to battle. Leaving this menu and clicking it again has no effect and delay repeats every time when conflux is clicked. Movement within the menu itself remains fluid and immediate.

    - None of these issues ease over time. Not even when all inventories are successfully loaded and the loading icons on upper right corner disappear. These issues persist whole run from start to finish.

    - Actions such as pressing a menu button on screen or pressing a macro is not skipped or anything and no additional button presses are required. The action simply executes 10 seconds later on screen (or skips it entirely) from sending said command to SE server... Likewise macro strings that use multiple job abilities in succession will execute successfully if player waits that 10 second server delay... Just 10 second later from sending the request to SE servers.

    - Messages sent to linkshell chat show a little delayed as well (2 - 5 seconds). As has been observed by watching other people play and sending a linkshell message from within Sheol: Gaol. Outside the area these messages remain near instant.

    - No fluctuation whatsoever happens in FPS value. Frames per second remain entirely stable and constant 30 fps across all situations.

    - Ping and latency to Square Enix servers also remains in the usual 250 - 280 ms range and no fluctuation outside the mentioned range is detected inside Sheol : Gaol or outside the content.

    - This issue persists on various different computers and operating system (Windows 7, Windows 10, etc.).
    - Several different players also report similar delay within Sheol: Gaol battle content, although the severity of this delay can vary greatly for every person.
    - No similar delay is experienced anywhere else in Vana'del. This issue is solely Odyssey Sheol: Gaol content specific, as far soloing and taking part in a party of up to 6 people goes anyway.

    - Important to note also that these issues are not present in Sheol A, B or C areas. These areas, at the very least, remain playable to some extent, although there is some slight lag there as well.

    - A full file check has been performed for both playonline and final fantasy xi data files from within playonline program, and no problems were detected.

Many of these experienced issues are very similar to what players experience when taking part in the Domain Invasion battle content. Mireu in particular, where potentially hundreds of players are taking part in same battle. Player inventory in particular can become completely unresponsive in Domain Invasion and items take extended amount of time to move between inventories, sometimes never moving at all. Which feels strangely similar to Sheol: Gaol "lag".
