FFXIV keeps players' access to the novice network until they both 168 hours of play time (an entire week of continuous play) AND they'have completed the main story available up to that point and technically have access to endgame.

I realize FFXI isn't as structured and doesn't gate as much content behind the story but it should at least require players to complete one of the nation mission series or something beyond that.
