It seems to work fine for me, even when using the same storage (speaking of Ambuscade back armour as an example).

It does break at times, probably due to the item changing via upgrading it more for example (actually it looks like simply trading them without changes to Gorpa-Masorpa is enough). Whenever that happened, I'd simply re-set the item for the set, and things started working again.
