Has anyone found a fix for this? Coming back to the game and while my controllers all used to work without any issues, that doesn't seem to be the case anymore. I feel like I've tried everything at this point. Any troubleshooting I've tried seems to fix one thing while introducing another problem, i.e. installing an xinput conversion driver like dshidmini causes strange button misalignments and triggers being detected as the right stick instead of buttons... Doesn't help that when I just say screw it and plug in an xbox controller that just doesn't get detected at all - though I'm thinking *that* might just be a windows 10 problem as steam doesn't seem to recognize it either.
If anyone has any ideas or solutions that haven't already been discussed exhaustively elsewhere online, I'm all ears.
Also, apologies for the necro post.

Update - In my frustration I went with the semi-nuclear option and reinstalled everything I could short of a full OS reset, and it seems like a newer version of the dshidmini driver than what I was using before fixes every issue I was having. If I had to guess, a Windows 10/11 update broke something, but thankfully there are newer versions of the driver now that appear to address this. Your mileage may vary but if you're using a PS2/PS3 controller, this appears to be the fix as the overlapping L-stick and D-pad issue isn't present, the triggers appear to correctly function as mappable buttons, and when Xinput is enabled in Final Fantasy XI's controller configuration all of the buttons match their appropriate equivalent - no more weird mismatches.
Now to figure out why my 360 controller won't work....
