So... why aren't you playing Final Fantasy XIV?

Just thought it would be interesting to see answers to this question from FFXI players.

I've got two issues, personally: hardware and social.

On the hardware end, quite simply I don't have it. For the PC, I'd need to shell out $150-$200 for a graphics card that is realistically capable of playing the game (the "minimum requirements"are a bald-faced lie, in my opinion), and that's money I just don't have, especially not for just one game.

I could say that I'm waiting for the PS3 version, but between my white-knuckled grip on firmware 3.15 (Other OS) and being on my second YLOD (at $150 a pop), I don't think I'll be able to play a new PS3 game.

But overall, my greatest concern is social. I can see no way of elegantly transplanting my social linkshell from FFXI to FFXIV. Even if I had the hardware to play the game, not everybody in my linkshell does (insufficient PC, Xbox instead of PS, etc), and they'd be left behind. And even if everybody in my linkshell was able to play both FFXI and FFXIV, there's still the problem that we'd be balkanized: two separate linkshells in two separate games just don't add up to a single cohesive group.

    didn't like it in beta...

Interface drove me nuts, as I play with a PS2 controller on my PC and I am too accustomed to how FFXI is setup and XIV was simlar but just different enough to annoy the hound out of me. Didn't care much for how you "quest" either, but both those things are just wonkiness I'd have to get used too. But, I have too much to do still in XI still, and it was obviously unfinished--might as well go back to XI and when I'm pretty much tired of that and XIV has matured a little I'll probly go to it.

Specifically though, some things I really didn't like were the limits put on advancing (fatigue system thing forcing you to change jobs after a while), and lack of a freaking Auction House was a boneheaded move. If not going to let us have centralised locations to sell warez directly to players, then let us sell stuff to NPC's directly for decent profit (but also provide a means to purchase items directly from NPC's for a reasonable price as well)--the AH system rounds all that out.

My main problem has always been with communication inside it's interface. They've managed to fix most of my complaints, but the font size is still just to small for me to notice when people are talking to me, and it really seems like most of the servers players also have this problem. That or they just don't like to interact with other people. I also cant figure out the seek/search for party functions of the game if there even are any, and for me, playing an MMO by myself is just not fun at all.

Lack of auto attack and needing to spam buttons to fight stuff is also not funw ith a controller, and I refuse to use the keyboard, so that also hurts it a lot IMO, and honestly, those are the only 2 things I like to do in MMOs, fight stuff and talk to people.

Because it still needs a lot of work. I will play FFIV once they get it to a thoroughly enjoyable state. I have faith that they will.

The game sucks and I have waaaaaay mor fun in ffxi. No ah was the major reason I quit along with there not being a lot of worthwhile content. Armor almost seems pointless. In that game.

Pretty much exactly this, though many of my LSmates also did the beta and we played on the same server. Still didn't do it for any of us (to my knowledge). One person quit both games, everyone else stuck with XI.

Final Fantasy XIV needs to do 2 things in order for me to begin playing it again.

    1) Become a true successor to Final Fantasy XI so that old FFXI players will feel right at home. This is already on it's way with things like an auction house, auto-attack, and other FFXI features returning with upgrades, but it's not quite completed yet.As silly as it sounds, I was actually wanting FFXIV to be FFXI HD. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Granted FFXI has it's share of problems, but it's still the best MMO I ever played.

    2) A seriously epic story that will keep me glued to the game. FFXI started this with Shadow Lord and I'm still playing it. FFXIV needs to grip me.

I pleyed the beta and it was a horrible attempt at a WoW clone. SE needs to not follow what is the current "in" and think ontheir own two feet. Yes I know this got them into trouble in the past, but that's the risk of the market(No I'm not talking about ecconomy.).

I found it harder to make friends in XIV than in XI. Perhaps this is because I started XI a year after NA launch and so people were more friendly, I'm not sure. I joined the server a few members from my ls chose and none of them logged on often and so I was mostly by myself in XIV. I loved the graphics and the sounds but the game was often crashing, especially in the middle of levequests and since that seemed to be the best way to get xp I often ended up frustrated. I also felt like XIV was almost entirely a copy of World of Warcraft and I didn't really care for WoW so playing a FF game based on it was pretty unsettling.
