New player here, I have some questions.

    1. what is the most populated server?
    2. how to get started? I've come to realize that nothing is spell out for me here, so any push in a certain direction would be good.
    3. best class to start out with. I chose WAR due to it being my main job in XIV
    4. best city to start with.

    thanks in advance.

    1) Asura. Most servers are sadly half dead so it gets really hard to do catch up content if you are a new player
    2) The best way is to get a LS and ask around to people. You can get it from a LS NPC near the town entrance. Also a) Get trusts as soon you can b) Learn what RoE is and follow the Tutorial RoE c) Get an unity d) Touch every crystal and book (Survival Guide) you run into, you'll be able to warp to them
    3) Doesn't really matter for leveling content these days, anything goes. Leveling is quite fast so don't be afraid to experiment. For end game, like most MMORPG, Tanks healer and supports (GEO, COR) are the most requested class since everyone plays DD.
    4) Doesn't matter.

    1/2/3: What Jin said. XD
4: San d'Oria has a slightly more convenient layout to get around than Bastok, and Windurst is much more inconvenient than either of the other two.

If you end up on Asura, feel free to hit me up if you need a Newbie 101 class. ^^ Look for Nyarlko or Cthuuko and either me will be happy to help (as long as you don't catch me while I'm actually doing something like an LS event. lol)

Asura is the official reddit and facebook server, so even though it's populated I would avoid it like the plague tbh.

    It's not that hard to simply not join their related linkshells. ^^;;
Not all of their members are unpleasant, but I will admit to having more negative experiences w/ Reddit than positive ones.
I picked Asura when I came back last year because of Reddit, but was picked up by several non-megalith LS who've been good friends ever since. Plenty of good people so far. Bad apples are the still the exception to the rule.

Don't avoid.... I was on a dead server (as are most of them now). It was boring as hell, mainly Auction House facing, one shout a day, and around 280 people online my prime time (half of which were mules/multibox). I moved to Asura, and yeh it does have it's fair share of idiots but has ton's to do and constant shouts - you can pick and choose what you want to join or not.

If you want to get going in stuff, and have a good choice of stuff to do in groups - go to Asura.
If you like doing stuff on your own, and seeing probably one shout a day - Any other server.

I would say don't avoid Asura. It is the "goto" server when asked about where to go when joining XI so of course you'll also have your share of, let's call them "Happy people." However, the dead servers have even more "happy people" which would make your game time worse. So I would suggest Asura if you want to play on a server where there's actually a playerbase, otherwise you better get used to being alone on servers like valefor or Odin. JP time on Odin is okay..but that's a problem if you don't speak Japanese.

I'm not sure why you'd want to pug content/join shout groups in this game. All you need is a decent linkshell of people who aren't boring to play with(read: don't run all mage comps with a single paladin).

Well, aside being a viable option, the deader the server the less likely it is to find a linkshell to join because people will already be in their set little cliques, so joining a linkshell who already work together with the (very likely) low number they have would be hard to actually be a part of, because if you have a good set of 6, how likely are you to swap in a new player? Especially to catch them up?
