I think it would be a great idea to not only get a box expansion but be able to use our newly earned atma in these new areas.
You have to understand something, though. The PS2 HDD can hold up to 40GB (if you bought the official one). HDD support is very very small, even smaller for the US players. Most, if not all games with HDD support are no longer being played. Resident Evil Outbreak, for example, closed it's online servers YEARS ago in the USA and it's barely alive in japan.

FFXI, right now, only uses 1/4th of the HDD. When FFXI fills up all 40GB, that's when it truly must end.

If they're going to ditch PS2, get rid of XLax CrashBox support while you're at it.

It's almost comedic to hear all the XLax users crash during Besieged.

1st I understand. Understand the that HDD for PS2 came out 8 years ago and they stopped making them 4-5 years ago and they are as rare now as a HD-DVD player and as useless. Wenceslao is right... Just phase ps2 support and users out. And a good way to start is to make a box expansion that does not support PS2. That way we can have better graphics and framerates for EVERYONES enjoyment. 'cept PS2.

People continually forget that the majority of JP players use PS2s.

PS2 support is *NOT* going away as long as this is true.
