What are "designations"?

I'm a casual FFXI RPer, and while I have never interrupted my subscription since when I started in late 2006, in the past couple years my time on FFXI has been very limited. I've also been away from all forms of high level content (my characters are geared, at best, from the Abyssea times).

So I've been doing some studying through the Update threads, and in the latest ones I've often seen this quote:

New designations have been added.

I've googled and searched, trying to find out what exactly "designations" are. The Freshly Pickled Vana'diel streams also do not make mention of this, so I am turning to you other players.

What ARE designations? What content are they related to?

Agreed, especially since they're referred to at "titles" in-game as well.
