Why not just party up with him and have a little fun farming the chapters and any other gear he'll need to get off to a decent start? A friend of mine recently came back after an 8 year break from the game and I helped him farm up some Escha gear for his BLM to get him started. After a couple of weeks he was fully capable of contributing to Escha and Reisenjima NM battles.
