Yeah, each piece of equipment/area/WS/etc. has it's own .DAT file. So as someone mentioned earlier, both Kasha and Fudo have their own .DAT file housing their own animation and effects. So while the animation is the same, no disk space is saved because of the redundant information.

While he is right that it is about efficiency. It's much cheaper and faster to modify equipment/textures/areas/etc. than create new ones. And considering the dev team probably consists of 3 members now, it's about the only choice they have.

You are wrong. The models, textures, and animations all use the same file.
You clearly have absolutely no idea what you're talking about and you know nothing about how the data files and data in general works. Different textures do NOT use the same file unless they are both in the same dat file. And even then, the dat file's size is the total size of all the things inside of it anyway, so it doesn't matter if it's the same file or not, it still takes up more space if there are more textures.

DAT files are archives. They contain multiple peices of information within them, yes. But the individual pieces of information within them vary in size. Different textures have different sizes, different models have different sizes, and this results in DAT files that have different sizes (Ignoring the fact that different DAT files have different amounts of objects in them).

Please, stop posting stuff like what you said. You're only making yourself look worse with each post- but since you seem to be intentionally trying to get yourself banned anyway, I guess it doesn't matter. Even using your own logic, that the "same file" is being used, this isn't more efficient how?

no disk space is saved because of the redundant information.
The WS have their own dat files, but the animations are not part of them. The animations are actually in several different places. The motions made by the character itself are part of the core animations associated with each race. The visual effects applied on the target are in a different place. Many WS use the same character motions and these do not consume additional space for each WS. Only the distinct visual effects consume additional space, and if those visual effects use any identical textures (a recolor is most likely a different texture in FFXI, though more advanced engines can recolor textures (these are called procedurally generated) without needing extra space) that DOES save memory/space.

Most of what you said is wrong. The full animation for ws is is each .dat for the ws, not for the character .dats. And with gear, both the textures, and model are stored in every .dat, they are no seperate.

Actually, it's most of what you said that's wrong. If that were accurate, the the game would take up several orders of magnitude more space than it currently does. But go on and keep telling yourself that. What you are seeing are references to other data, not the actual data itself.

(Note- there are a number of duplicate textures in the dats. However there are many items that share the same images and model for which only one corresponding texture I was able to find.)

They really should have remained shorts. You can hardly see the boots at all.
