I'd settle for them to just fix the summons we have now. Like.... elementals need some serious attention. I made the decision a long time ago not to go the elementals route because they are so screwed up. I have them all, and use them for emergency save my butt so I can run away moments and light spirit for buffs--otherwise, they are just tools for quick mp recovery. There is so much more potential in the elementals--especially with abyssea buffs/atmas now--but they are just too neglected by the dev team atm.
There are some other issues with Avatars for some hardcore SMN out there, not going to comment on that debate as I am happy with mine so far as I am a more casual SMN, but there has been a lot of chatter in the past about things needed for the avatars.

My biggest gripe is how AWFUL our pets DoT is even with Atma/Cruor buffs.
They have terrible DMG/hit, Its literally slightly better than a Dagger, and much longer delay. Our Bloodpacts pack a HUGE punch, But I'd like if our current avatars could see a DPS Boost.
Really, All i want for Christmas is our pets getting Better DPS, and some Subtle Blow traits.

While i think the Avatars we have are fine. Summoner is very far from a "job with limited Options"
We have an Avatar For Every Single Element, Each with a Strong(enough) Nuke for that Element. No other job (outside of Impact) has a Strong Dark based Nuke. Summoners do! Fenrir and Diabolos.
The Avatar Level 75BP's (Magical) Are incredibly Potent, Breaking into 10k+ With Set Bonus Proc on AF3. They are a force to envy, and being able to do it every ~35/45 Seconds makes it nice too, Especially considering players can get their Avatars 200~250TP every 45 seconds through armor/Mana Cede/melee.
And for Physical, Garuda, Titan, Leviathan, and (sometimes) Ramuh/Ifrit really do well. Fenrir's is less Damaging but is more Accurate. Garuda of course being the 'Cookie cutter' best. Though I've seen Ifrit put numbers out that makes Garuda blush.
Summoner also has one of the greatest buffs in the game, Perfect Defense. No other job can do what that days in AoE form. Also Odin can instantly KO multiple Targets, While random, I've seen it knock 5 Enemies dead in a single Instant, Very few other jobs can do that. Those things are fun for Exp parties, its like an instant 3,000 Exp and a Page in most parties
Summoner also has access to some of the widest away of Party-buffs/Healing moves (outside of BRD/COR/WHM). They have Hastega, Blink-AoE, Stoneskin-AoE, Migawari-AoE(I think thats Earthen Armor?), Etc etc. I could go on but you get the point.
Truthfully, I think Summoner should regain its ability as a unique buffer too. SMN used to be the only job that could Blink-ga, Stoneskin-ga, and Spikes/Enspell-ga. Now SCH can, and they can do it more often, and better. That literally robbed SMN of one of its core, core features, and i want it back. I don't suggest to nerf SCH, I Suggest either making our Bloodpacts Stronger (Wards) or Giving us ones that SCH cannot Accession. (Earthern Armor was a good start, But I'm not sure if its exactly like Migawari... or?)
Either way, I'm pretty much arguing your point for you. SMN doesn't need a New Avatar, a new toy, What they do need is improvements on what made them unique to begin with.
more AoE buffs Specific to SMN, more hate-free DMG(We do this pretty well as is), and most of all, Increase the DoT of our pets. Give every avatar Subtle Blow IV/V as well, Lord knows they could need it.

Summoner is the most annoying class in MMO history. It is very near perfect, but each part is slightly off and in the end nothing with the job is correct.
Things the job needs to be "fixed".
- Halved perpetuation. It is fine at 90 in full endgame gear, but Summoner should be playable before 90, don't you agree? Halving perpetuation would make it possible to play Summoner at early levels too.
- Halved spirit casting time. Having 50 seconds - seconds based on skill/day/weather is ridiculous. If you got to pick AM every single time I could understand it. But with the randomness it should rather be 15 seconds so that you on average get a nuke every 45 seconds.
- Spirits should not reset their spell timer on assault. I've bug reported this. Just hoping SE fixes it. God knows why it is "emergency maintenance" if you have 100% damage reduction on avatars, but if you have 100000000 seconds casting timer to wait on it takes over 6 years to fix it.
- Spirits should have casting patterns. Debuff -> nuke -> debuff -> nuke. Never the same type of spell twice in a row.
- Spirits should have no perpetuation at all. Yea, now you are exactly as overpowered as those yagudo summoners walking around the world.
- Summoning magic should grant bonuses based on skill over cap RELATIVE TO LEVEL PACT WAS LEARNED. So you'd have a crazy long duration on things like crimson howl, but much shorter duration on earthen armor. This makes older wards stronger. In addition the potency should raise, just how singing skill boosts BRD songs. Example: Nocturnal Shield should be as good as Phalanx, since it should scale with skill.
- BP timer should change concept. It should be a single JA, not Rage and Ward, but it would be the only way to use a pact hate free. In addition all pacts per avatar is available on individual timers that send the hate directly to the Summoner. Now you can play as in the old days, or you can actually be efficient and toss up debuffs on the monster, dispel, hastega, cure etc.
- The defensive pacts should be MP-free. Nobody can complain that a Summoner can toss upp def+, ice spikes, stoneskin, phalanx, MDB all at once, because all that stuff won't do a single thing except make the WHM cast less cures. And last I checked WHM MP was not an indication of kill speed. (Well, once WAAAAAY back it was the limiting factor)
As you see. Summoners need nothing new, just the existing things done properly. Less restrictions, more freedom. As it is now, it is like playing a SAM + BLM mix, where you need both TP through regain (BP timer) and MP to do something half as good as either of the jobs, but with the bonus of not pulling hate (hint! if you do half damage of a SAM, any SAM in the party would tank way before your SMN would tank even if all hate went to SMN instead of avatar)
I said it 2004 and I'll say it again. If I had my hands on the source code, the job would be perfect in a week. Why it takes 6+ years to hardly make anything right is beyond me. Do they ask the BLM and SAM forums for Summoner ideas? Have they got a single developer that plays Summoner? Does he play in pickups or only with his developer friends who doesn't care that he is just a waste of space on their adventures?

Let's focus on the elemental, really they could be USEFUL if they fixed how often they cast spells. How come they cannot act like an Automaton acts when spell casting? Light Elemental would be sooo awesome...
Also Avatars have the Defense of a wet noodle..
