There's no real point to jumping. Those ledges and barriers that in real life we could jump over or at least climb up are designed to prevent players from going that way. Even if jumping had been implemented from the beginning, the designers would have simply made the barriers and ledges higher so you wouldn't be able to jump up to them anyway.
There are no rocks to jump across to traverse rivers, no outcrops of rock to climb up a cliff, no hidden zones or treasure by hopping onto a roof and crawling into some NPC's attic. The areas in the game were not made with that action in mind. You might as well ask to get the galka together to push that broken pillar off the stairs to Byakko, rob the shopkeepers or guild merchants, or shoot down airships with BLM spells when you're bored. Fun though they may be.
This is not to say getting a /jump animation is out of the question, but an animation is all it would be. From the game's perspective you would still be rooted to the ground and unable to hop over a discarded napkin.
Those God-awful flights of steps in Ordelle's would like a word with you.
I agree, jumping has it problems, it allows retards to jump around like a 5-year-old on a bouncy ball in areas like the AH, and other popular gathering places, I so hate places like Orgrimmar in WOW and 21st Hall in LoTR:O for that.
OTOH, I disagree it's "not needed", much of the terrain in the game is low steps which even a Taru could jump up, let alone the other races.
I always find myself frustrated when I come back to FFXI .. the MMO I sill love above all the others I play .. due to the tedious running around stupidly low ledges in places like La Theine and the like.
Its not like they can have a full 3d world now like current gen MMOs where you can fly around go to different areas ect. Assuming PS2 limitations on this one.
