    POL-1158: Version Update Communication Error

I had just created my new account after purchasing through Steam about a week ago (delay due to earthquakes as I'm sure you all know) when I tried to play the actual game. PlayOnline viewer then tries to update my Final Fantasy XI, which I wouldn't have a problem with except that it apparently can't actually do the update because of this error. Do I have to update through Steam, or can I get the update through the website itself? Thank you all for your time ^.^

I've been having the same exact issue preventing me from updating and playing the game. Downloaded from Steam(which I'm not sure is relevant because my friends also downloaded it from Steam and could update just fine).
I don't know if it's related, but I'm also getting a "Friend list communication error POL-5312" when I enter the PlayOnline Viewer.
I would also be very grateful to receive a response on how to resolve this issue.

Okay. So I did some searching around and found another thread on this POL-1158 Error. I don't know why, but the Steam version is the issue. Luckily I had a CD version from some time ago and I went ahead and installed that. Did all my PlayOnline updates and logged in(didn't get that Friend list communication error). Went to do updates for Final Fantasy XI (with fingers crossed) and was glad to see that my 9 hours of updates started with no error messages. I sincerely hope either you can figure a way to get the Steam version to work for you or that you can get a CD version to install.

Edit: Went ahead and found the link to that other thread which happens to be on the Steam Users' Forum: http://forums.steampowered.com/forum....php?t=1377423

Ok found a solution. You don't need to re-install ffxi! I got the steam version on new years and had been playing the trial account version. I was not able to update playonline and noticed it was a different version than the one i had been using with the trial account.

Use either a hard copy of the game or the installer from the trial version zip (downloadable here http://www.finalfantasyxi.com/freetrial/) to re-install playonline and tetra master.

Run the installer for playonline and tetra master it should uninstall the previous version. Go to {Program files (x86)- Stream- steamapps- common- ffxi- SquareEnix} and make sure the playonline folder and tetra master folder are deleted ( delete them if need be). Re-run the installer and have it install into the {...common-ffxi} folder. For me it automatically put the new install of playonline and tetra master right next to FINAL FANTASY XI in the SquareEnix folder. (it keeps your install of the game ffxi intact)

Then i booted the game through steam and it acted like it was the first time i had booted it up (asked if i was a playonline member ect). Playonline updated then once i had logged in and gotten to the game the game updated just fine (took 50 mins)

    Hope this helps!

I tried pretty much the same method as Droront except I shut down steam, removed playonline and tetra master folders then opened steam back up and right clicked on ffxi~clicked properties~then Local files~finally Verify Integrity of game cache. Once completed this did force playonline viewer to update to latest version.

This in turn led to another problem; I now receive the message:
"The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable.
Click ok to try again , or enter an alternative path to a folder containing the installation package 'Playonline Viewer Tetra Master.msi' in the box below." The file is not present anywhere and I have no hard copy of the game.

    Please help!
