This would be awful unless it was limited to only the zone.

Or maybe something that was clickable.. like an fov book.. or monument.. that would tell you when the NM last died.
you have a lot of stuff already handed to you, why do you need HNMs too? it's a reward to find and claim a rare nm, not have it given to you like a free hand out.
Idk.. i always thought the 24+ hour pop NM's was the worst part of ffxi...
it encouraged botters and other third party tools in the game..
It would be nice if they could find a way to do away with the long spawn times all together.. so more people can experience the "Challenge" of a "HNM"
I will have my revenge!
I always thought they should make HNM's rarity per person / group rather than a specific time on the server..
Ie.. you could only fight a specific NM once a week or once a month..
like an extended wait period for an enm....
maybe could implement an elite fov regime style pop system.. where you need your key item to assist in the fight.. and if you don't have it can't cure others or engage the NM..
for example you go to fight behemoth with your once a week key item. Win or lose you can't fight again for another week.. nor anybody else who assisted you would be able to fight..
If it was like the fov elite regimes.. outside people couldn't cure you.. and people couldn't join halfway.
With a system like that.. NM's would still be sufficiently rare.. and the drops they have would still be valuable and an "accomplishment"... but people wouldn't have to worry about competing against a bot
If this was something other than zone only, it would also give RMT/botters the chance to coordinate their entire play time, knowing where they had to be and when for every NM pop throughout the game. It has now no longer made it easier for those with less time to play, because every NM they try for will have hundreds of people camping it.
Even as zone only, ppl could still simply put their mules just into the zone so they don't have to worry about agroing anything and still get ToD.
I like the idea behind this approach. Unfortunately, the key item method wouldn't work in the current state of the game (limited number of items in KI list, forget if that was a PS2 or Database limit, but it's a design issue).
The Elite regime idea though...adding it to the hunt lists would be a nice alternative, as it could be handled server side. It could still be a bit of an issue though, as if you are in a party you could spawn it multiple times (each member could pop it). Might have to make it so party leader has to pop, or alliance leader if in an alliance--that way it limits it somewhat to 6 pops until you dissolve and re-ally. But, then again if they could only do it once a real-life week, and the ??? was on a 15 minute timer it might work somewhat. Either way, you'd probly still have a bunch of people camping the ???...
There will always be something to trip up the process I guess.

the 'elite hunt' stuff is nice and all, but we kind of already have 2 systems similar to that, which no one really even uses outside a few trials. remember VNMs and ZNMs? if we instated yet another system of hunting KI NMs outside of abyssea, whos to say it wouldnt just become a relic of the past like these two things?
What NMs are really worth SE putting in a huge new system for anymore?
