The reason for the majority dislike of this thing is the fact that she is being overinflated in terms of SE shoving her down everyone's throat. She appears in these games.
Final Fantasy XIII
Final Fantasy XII-2
Dissidia Final Fantasy 012
Final Fantasy XIII: LIGHTNING RETURNS
Final Fantasy XIV
She overstayed her welcome way too much.
The thing that puts the two in separate categories, the game's protagonist for VII played a musical chairs of deal, it wasn't always cloud getting rammed in our face, and I liked that it shared the stories of people like Vincent, Yuffie, Tifa, (Not Cait Soth, I have a bad relationship with him cuz of his cousin's late arrival to ffxi.)
But with XIII? Oh no it's the same protagonist, she's now final fantasy's poster girl, because she's got attitude and has the sex appeal to make any fan boy wet his pants. As long as te character is visually appealing, they'll sell w/e and not think twice about it. It only serves as a reminder to why I sometimes hate the fact that the JP portion of the community has the "Home field advantage" kind of thing when it comes to devs and the company listening to them while they ignore an entire globeworth of people.
Oh also did EU/NA ever get that poll or was it JP only?

I like Lightning and i'm not even attracted to women so that definitely doesn't factor on why I enjoy her character or on why some others enjoy her as well...
People just don't like Square no matter what they do at this point. XV and Lightning Returns can be great games and Square will still get hate from the loud vocal fans. That's how it is and how it will always be moving on to the future, this also doesn't just apply to Square either, pretty much every game company is experiencing this right now in different ways.
Back on topic.
This will most likely never be possible, also the fanbase of the two online titles are split and generally don't get along.
