I would say "If you've been playing this game more than a year and you don't have 90 blm yet you're gimp," BUT the moderators find words such as those to be inflammatory. Instead, I'll say that you should consider taking blm higher than 45/49 because a) it's easy as hell, and b) blm is still a useful job to have leveled (especially if you're one of those people who only leveled jobs like pup and dnc).
Edit: Your rdm is approaching 90 when it's only level 39?
I burned all my jobs to 90.

The ease of getting to 99 may make me reconsider. I currently have 4 jobs at 90 that I'm still working on the gear for. I purposely didn't start the game with a mage job. Blame the Brady Guide. It said a Taru Monk would be a fun challenge. LIES. Taru Monk is fun once you had another job to 75 and could afford the gear you needed, as well as some merited stat increases. But, I purposely avoided BLM and am just now getting around to leveling it. It was pretty much a worthless sub on my main jobs.
p.s. - I always have my jobs in my siggie so people know from what experience I am talking.
p.p.s. - Read the context of my response to the poster citing the example of RDM99/BLM45. Then think about how I might be making that statement as though RDM 99 is something that is happening anytime soon.

Playing Since NA PS2 Release
you forgot to add some R attack and attack ( why my rng likey fire staff HQ
and some cure potency
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
please do this SE, ill save me a lot of headache inventory issues trying to replace 8 elemental staffs with magin trials.
I do not care if it is subpar to 99 magin trails i am not doing 25 staffs to replace 8.
This thread I vote as best idea ever on fourms, lest give some reason to craft!
( when you add soem cure potency, attack and range attack)
also the 51 staffs had other stats like crt hit rate + if that matters to you.
Heal mp.. what else...
oh additional effect ( elemental en- effect based on mob weakness)
On top of consolidating the staves, I would also like to see options for the sea obis, the sea gorgets, the new elemental satchels, and the new elemental belts. Compressing 40 possible inventory slots to 5 would be wonderful.
The idea of using HQ staffs in a synergy to get HQ staves isn't going to be added. I've never seen anything where using HQ materials will ever give you higher results. It's always standard materials give you standard results.
I would actually prefer if there was just a quest line where you give someone all 8 staves, then go get all 8 stones (flamestone, tidestone, etcetera) from the cloysters, and then give them to some dude, and he forges you a new staff based whether they were all NQ or HQ, and they could make it a Rare EX item or not, usable at what ever level, and then maybe add some trials to it so that so it can be customizable.
Maybe Refresh +1-5 or even 2-10 if it's an HQ version. Then maybe on the next trial you could add a job specific trait like +X Fast Cast, or "Enhances Grimoir Effect", or +X Cure Potency. This way we could have 1 staff to rule them all, but wouldn't it be nice to have a bad freaking a staff that lets you customize? Make the staff for the things that you care about most on a mage. Refresh is nice on any mage class, but on a Summoner it's the bees knees but give them the opportunity to have some other benefits to go along with that.
Some Goldsmithing recipes would like to disagree with you. Gold Ring +1 is an example. The idea of using HQ staffs in a synergy to get HQ staves isn't going to be added. elemental staves do need to grow up to join the game, no question. They sort-of had this with the kirin's pole, at least as to the casting part (but not the extra goody on each individual element's staff), but that staff was not an all jobs staff (and wasn't my bard pissed about that!). So yes, either something like you propose (obviously we couldn't have all the extra goodies from all 8 staves on 1), or else new versions to accomodate the 48 levels (once we hit 99 cap) added since these must-haves for every caster in the game were invented!
i like this idea also, i used to think they should take all the belts/rings etc from avatar fights and be able to make a rainbow item or something that has same effects for each day but is only one item, same with ele staves, and the ele obis SC gorgets from sea
