I don't get this SE azure lights are built from finishing kills with magic yet none of the magical attacks thunder iv for example count toward azure lights? What's the deal with this? Can anyone explain?

Just the game treats all BP as physical unless its a elemental killing the mob. Can have the elemental nuke it . ^^
Yep, all BPs are coded as a melee kill-shot. Using a spirit to nuke it, or subbing SCH to nuke yourself are the best ways to get azure on SMN.
Physical are weird too, though. Rather than ruby, all bloodpacts are pearl as Babekeke said. So it isn't just magical that are weird, but physical as well.
Here's your explanation:
Damage type doesn't matter. It's the command menu that matters.
Auto-attack and pet commands give pearlescent light, regardless of whether it's physical or magical damage. Additionally, instant death effects like Zantetsuken and Twilight Scythe's endeath effect also give pearlescent light. Therefore, avatars can only give pearlescent light.
Magic spells give azure light. Notice that your avatars don't cast any spells. They "ready" job abilities that have the same names as black mage spells. However, those job abilities work quite differently, using the Avatar's TP to bolster the power, having equal MP costs and damaging power across all six elements, and being usable while silenced but not while under the effect of amnesia.
Now, there are pets that can give azure light. Automatons and SMN spirits don't use pet commands to cast spells. It is the pet command menu that gives pearlescent light. Since the pet command menu is not used, and these are actual spells with casting times rather than "ready" messages, they give azure light.
