    Complete Noob (ODIN)

Myself and a few of my RL friends have finally jumped onto the wagon that is FFXI.

This game is unbelievably difficult, in the sense that we have no clue what we're doing. We understand difficulty in mobs, (as I was taken out by a sheep), so we've adapted and have taken to the grinding a bit slower than other MMO's we've played.

But what about Missions & Quests? I just did a Mission in Bastok in the mines to hand a report to the President, and I received nothing from it. But when I did a quest, I got a sword, better than the starter.

My issues with this are as follows:
1 - There's no indicator as to who gives out Missions or Quests
2 - All markers on my map are blank. I have ONE marker, in green, but it points me to an NPC who gave me the Adventurer Coupon. I've already completed this, it needs to go away or something.

Likewise, we have no idea the values of items we're picking up, and anything we consume, we have no idea what the effects may be. I've found out, eating meat scraps give me some strength boost, but lower my intelligence. But how do I find this out without eating... and does this mean I need to write everything down for future reference?

Crafting itself is confusing, we all have so many crystals, we understand these crystals are used for crafting, as we cooked some lizard tail with a fire crystal... But what about the others?

Is it just my friends and I, that are experiencing such huge levels of difficulty? This game so far has not been noob friendly, and my mind starts to ask : How did players around the world understand this game when it first came out?

Are there any guides out there that explain, every single aspect in detail? We're so lost.

    Thx.

Take everything you know about MMOs, and throw is out the Window (Literally).

If you play FFXI, the grinding is slower at low levels, and has a decent learning curve, and is not "Mindlessly Mash these three buttons" type of game as well. If you need help on where to start, try to find a linkshell (guild) in FFXI, and find friendly players. I just started up again my self, but I think the game has pretty much stayed the same.

As for looking for help, you can also try doing a good search looking up FFXI Wiki. Since you are a Bastokian, try looking up Bastok missions.

Alsol, this game has NO quest markers, only those you put in your self. Quests can be confusing, but using the wiki, they can be easy.

To give you an idea, we figured it out by brute force and community effort. And wrote it down, thankfully. I'm going to give you a few -very- handy websites here.

FFXIclopedia- the oldest decently-maintained wiki for the game out there. It's newer relations are Gamerescape and Blue Gartr wiki, all of which can be easily Googled for their links. That includes info on what things are, what they're good for, quests and how they work, class guides, the whole nine yards.

FFXIAH- this is the economic side of the equation, and also a decent forum to boot. FFXIAH not only shows you how much things sell to PLAYERS via the Auction House, it usually contains links to items for most of the decent info sites on the web as well.

I'd help more directly, but I'm on Ragnarok instead of Odin- there's folks out there like me that enjoy getting new players into the game. It's deep and huge and as a result, it's also daunting at times- but it's worth it. It'll never lead you by the hand directly. If you do happen to start a character there, though- do look me up!

Hey there, I just deleted my character to restart on Odin since it has a higher population. Ign is Agaard. Do you play 360 or pc?

Ign is Qqueue. I'm on the 360, but I have a laptop close by, as well as a keyboard slapped into my usb on my Xbx, so comm's aren't difficult.
