    World Indicator

So many people around the world playing FFXI yet so hard to tell what part of the world people are from especially when dealing with those who do not speak any English or the same language of the person you are communicating with.

It would be nice if SE could place region info more accurately than the system thats implemented now because although the game does support this, most of the time it does not show up.

I also think it would change peoples point of view and give better understanding to those who are trying to communicate with others who do not speak English/Japanese especially when other languages like French, German, Chinese, Korean etc are not supported.

Imagine a Japanese player wants to communicate with someone who is from France thinking that person is American?

Or an American person wanting to talk to someone who they thought was Japanese but instead the person is Chinese?

    Any thoughts? Comments?

While it might help some, it would only create more segregation between the players, after all, some people are racist to others in this game. I have seen some people who would not invite JP players even though they spoke fairly good English, or at least understood a good amount. At the same time, I have met some people who can read some Japanese, these people often get turned down because while they can read it, they can not write it, which puts them in a position of being unable to join. Right now, its possible to blend in with others, and avoid this problem, but if you specifically label everyone by their country for all to see, this becomes impossible, and there is no way to avoid the potential racism that could, and likely would, ensue.

All in all, while it would be a feature that would help understand who exactly you are communicating with, and possibly help out a bit when talking to others, it would label people as well, and probably create some problems among players, so I have to say no to this one, I rather keep it how it is.

That's odd, I've never been turned down by Japanese players for not being able to read but can write out things in English.

    Hajimemasite, Yorosiku onegaisimasu~

I've also managed to do perfectly fine with the auto translate function.

Only time I've ever been declined an invite by JP party was if the leader is the type who has no patience to communicate with a team mate who cannot be understood. Lets face the reality this does not mean only JP players do it.

If you are leading a party, I'm sure as a leader, you wouldn't want to command a party if you cannot communicate the plan with those who cannot speak the same language as you. This has nothing to do with racism. That's communication.

Some people are racist, but we are living in 2013, not back in the 20's,30''s,40's,50's,60's,70's,80's era. I'm sure most of us in this generation are beyond that now, and everyone who is currently playing FFXI know already they are playing with a mixed community. A True racist wouldn't even be here if that's the case.

I think it would also help those wanting to make friends in different cultures if we knew what part of the world you are from. Would save the question being asked in every single conversation "What time zone are you in"

But again that's just my take on it.

Not sure what you mean by that. The game comes in Japanese, English, Deutsch, and Français (which the auto-translate feature fully supports).

As for the suggestion itself, I wouldn't mind if there was additional, optional settings to show one's locale or/and nationality more clearly, but I would not want it to be forced upon users.

I don't see it needed, and can easily see users discriminating others due to their nationality. It does happen even now. If I want to know where another player is from, I shall ask them. Makes it more fun, and gives more to talk about (perhaps not all the time, but ehh).

So yeah. It's an okay idea, but I'd say no. Maybe yes for some optional settings, but personally I'd probably not put the effort into implementing it. I'd likely much rather work on implementing Japanese input method support for the non-Japanese clients with the GUI revamps.

    Ha! One can hope.

    By the by, yer missing some h action over there, in your Japanese. ^^;

Meaning people won't assume they are arguing with a Jp player when in fact it was someone from Thailand. Or Assume that French player was RMT because he did not know how to communicate with you.

Or Chinese player not responding to tells leading someone to think it was a JP player ignoring you.

I've even misunderstood certain players trying to figure out what nationality they are. And yes certain cultures respond differently.

I just wish it was easier to tell which nation a person is from before making wrong assumptions.

I believe China and Korea uses JP client.

I don't see discrimination being hardcore as you guys make it out to be since we know Olympics are held in different nations. Beijing in my opinion was the best I've ever seen. Really made the world see China differently.

Everything could have a bad side regardless, but I haven't seen anyone mention the good side of it.

I rember when I was a kid, our teacher did a penpal event. One person I chose to write to was from Poland. It was amazing learning about a person from another part of the world.

Maybe I'm just too open minded in wanting to know the world and people from different cultures.

    I see.

Hmmm, I guess I just never made such assumptions nor cared where people are from, and instead, treated them the same way I treat all the other people regardless of being from Mars or Jupiter.

    So I guess I see your point, but I can't relate. :S

It's certainly not that I am not open-minded about people; I have been in relationships with foreign people, living with them in their country without knowing the land nor the language (though slowly learning bits here and there).

I know I'm not saying that you are not open minded at all. Just I've seen some people rush to assume that certain players are bad without understanding the cultural differences. Or making wrong assumptions without knowing who the person they are talking to.

Just like I explained in my topic "World indicator" that Ive seen NA players posing to be JP players because they can write in Japanese and make out the middle finger ASCII picture in chat.
