    Magic Skill VS Element 101

In this article we will be taking a closer look at Magic Skill VS Element. We know magic skill is defined in categories such as Enfeebling, Enhancing, Healing, Divine, Enhancing etc. Spells that show the Element however is based on Fire, Ice, Earth, Wind, Water, Light and Dark. Gear that increases the "Magic Accuracy" for the specific element in question do exist therefore to prevent confusion, the purpose of this article is to show you how to use the correct equipment to enhance magic spells.

I will start off by showing you some magic spells and the descriptions that go with it.

    Gravity
    http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Gravity

    Spell Cost: 24
    Spell Element: Wind
    Magic Skill: Enfeebling Magic
    Jobs: Red Mage

Notice the Spell Element of Gravity is Wind? While the Magic Skill is Enfeebling Magic?

Lets take a look at the White Mage spell Addle.

    Addle
    http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Addle

    Spell Cost: 36 MP
    Spell Element: Fire
    Magic Skill: Enfeebling Magic
    Red Mage Lv. 83
    White Mage Lv. 93

The Spell Element for Addle is Fire while the Magic Skill is Enfeebling Magic.

Therefore a staff like this would support these 2 spells.

    Zamzummim Staff
    http://wiki.bluegartr.com/bg/Zamzummim_Staff
    (Staff) All Races DMG:80 Delay:366
    Fire Elemental Magic Accuracy+25
    Fire Elemental "Magic Atk. Bonus"+25
    Wind Elemental Magic Accuracy+25
    Wind Elemental "Magic Atk. Bonus"+25
    Lv.99 BRD/WHM/BLM/RDM/SCH/SMN

Lets take a look at another spell.

    Stun
    http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Stun

    Spell Cost: 25 MP
    Spell Element: Lightning
    Magic Skill: Dark Magic
    Dark Knight Level 37
    Black Mage Level 45

Although the Magic Skill here is Dark Magic, the Element is Thunder.
Therefore lets take a look at one of the Magian Trial Staves.

    Apamajas II

    DMG:57 Delay:366
    Lightning Affinity: Magic Accuracy+6
    Lightning Affinity: Recast Time -14%
    Lightning Affinity: Magic Damage +1
    Lv.99 WHM / BLM / RDM / BRD / SMN / SCH

Because some of these items can take time to obtain, cheaper alternatives are available in Auction House.

    Ice Staff
    http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Ice_Staff

    DMG:30 Delay:366 INT+4
    +15 Elemental magic skill
    +10 Additional effect: Ice damage
    Lv.51 All Jobs

    Hidden Effect
    Ice Magic Affinity +1
-2 Avatar Perpetuation Cost for Shiva and Ice Spirit

This thread is still under development

If you want, you can include the leveling path I posted in the "How fast is fast?" thread, though I think something better to touch on is Good mob selection for leveling. As while at lower levels this is not as significant, later on it starts having a more noticeable impact.

Like for someone soloing on DRG, if going as /mage, want to try and avoid mobs that Silence, AoE Sleeps, or Amnesia often, or have TP moves with high Damage potential like Sickle Slash and Death Scissors to name a couple. This changes a bit once get access to the JA trigger for Healing Breath.

Mages in general its good to focus on enemies like Beetles and Crabs due to them having MP to Aspir. Worms make another great target for mages if have access to Silence as well due to them not being able to move once engaged.

Fat bats in general make good targets due to not having many dangerous TP moves.

Also don't forget to keep in mind enemy weaknesses and resistances to damage types.

Just a light sampling of some things that go into selecting a good target mob.

@Daemon, don't know if you are active on wiki, I made a general soloing guide that may have something you are interested in, it is not job or gear specific but more general play notes. If you find anything useful in it feel free to help yourself. Search "My Way", it's the only thing that comes up in results. I tinker with it occasionally-been a couple months now, I need to remove the lack of merit references from geo and rune as an example.

Also, when you get your guide organized and into 1 complete document you might want to post it on the fan sites, it's alot easier to direct people to a link than it is to post elements in all these forum windows, especially since if there is no activity your guide falls off the screen here and NOBODY uses the search function on here, hence the 80+ threads whining about your r/m/e weapon not being the shiznet anymore on the forums. If people did the searches they might even notice that upgrading them HAS been answerred now, at least twice, they just haven't implemented the fix yet. I never link to my guide just because I hate being flamed, and I see a difference between constructive feedback and flames. On that subject, hope this guide doesn't get the flame treatment your last one did, at least you are trying to help, the flamers usually aren't.

your welcome-although I wasn't really telling you anything you didn't already know. And I did some of the revisions since I wrote the last post. BTW, if you have any comments about mine please do them on that "talk" page, I get notices of those, unlike here. And I hope you like it, you write your guides very well, like the style.

Instead of moving up to higher level exp mobs, once exp starts to go down, stick with fighting the lower levels instead because you can kill these easier opposed to spending more time killing higher level ones.

    Example
If you gained 150 EXP from 1 Crawler.
And you gained 95 EXP from 1 Mandragora.

Observe factors such as "Over the course of time" and pace.

So if it took 1 minute to kill X1 Crawler but also took you 1 minute to kill X3 Mandragoras.

That means killing X3 Mandragoras will give you 285 EXP as oppose to 150 EXP from fighting X1 Crawler. Therefore lower EXP mobs can sometimes prove to be easier and better in the long run.

Fighting something that's higher level may give you more EXP but because its harder and has more HP "over the course of time" may prove to be slower than fighting something slightly weaker and lower in experiance points.
be aware of the ensuing skill gap you are creating, you'll need to correct that at some point. Skill-up rate is max against EM-T prey, and cannot cap at all below DC-.
