I like how different races have their individuality, but at the same time you have little quirks such as...
Weight sensitive switches in Quicksand Caves. (1 Galka or 2 Hume/Elvaan/Mithra or 3 Taru to trigger)
Mithra can eat raw fish.
Galka can eat raw meat.
Those are all that come to mind at the moment, and I admit the ability of galka and mithra to eat raw meals isn't gamebreaking, they still have that tiny difference.
I like taru because it fits what I like best in the game. If my taru was the same as galka except being cuter I am not sure the game would hold as much interest for me.
I always found it strange that mithra can't eat raw meat, while fish is no problem. I mean cats eat both mice and fish and birds and stuff.
I found those things to be pretty amusing quirks though. Another fun thing would be if mithras dealt slashing damage when unarmed :>.
Actually I had an interesting idea the other day while driving home. Why not make the 3rd tier merits work with racial differences in game, now they are simply annoying stat differences and players make smart comments like further up this thread wanting to eliminate them but I disagree we need to expand upon the racial differences. Allow Racial differences to fine tune the advanced player in later life, some abilities to enhance racial strengths and expand weakness should actually benefit players. Also an ability for each race to go with the storyline weaknesses wouldn't hurt either. My idea's below.
Example Mithra(Envy)
t3 merit Racial abilities
Green eyes(passive): occasionally gives mithra an extra roll on treasure
Others based on Race stats
Galka(rage)
t3 merit
Temper Tantrum(passive): Extra attack upon successful crit
Others based on Race stats
Elvaan(Apathy)
t3 merit
Don't care(passive): Enmity dropped after disengaging an enemy.
Taru(Cowardice)
t3 merit
Flee Danger(passive): Speed boost when running from an enemy.
Hume(Arrogance)
t3 merit
Victory is mine(passive): Increased attack speed decreased Accuracy in combat.
These just a few that come to mind.
To the OP: They do start with a variant in stats in ffxiv.
A man should look for what is, and not for what he thinks should be. - Albert Einstein
The stat differences make sense logically, keep them.
