    POL-0245 Unknown Error

I have loaded the game off Steam, and it is not the first time I have loaded it on this machine. The game downloads fine in Steam and POL does its quick update. When I log in my POL account, it comes up with this error and I can't go any further. I can't find any information about this error code. Here are things I have tried so far:

    1. Uninstall and reinstall, same error
    2. Disable Firewall in Norton and Windows
    3. Changed compatibility mode to XP SP3, Vista, and 7. Tried all 3. I am running Windows 8.
    4. I also tried running the pol application outside of Steam.
    5. I have also Ran as Administrator (added this later, edit)

I am at a loss. Was hoping to do the long game updates overnight and play today but got stuck here last night. Anyone have any ideas? I searched forums and could not find anyone else with this same error.

I think I had the same problem as you...dont remember the error number but I did contact SE support and I was told to delete my account in PoL and then re-add it back in manual. I got the error after taking a 3 year break (still had FFXI installed on my system) and I was unable to log into PoL until I deleted the account and then re-added it.

Most likely it's the old problem of it not being uninstalled cleanly. from the Support portal FAQ (found via google):

I just reinstalled the Steam version of FINAL FANTASY XI and receive “Error code: POL-1158”.

This error message is a result of the Steam version of FINAL FANTASY XI not being uninstalled correctly. The “ffxi” directory is not uninstalled when you select “Delete Local Content” from Steam. This is prohibiting the PlayOnline Viewer and FINAL FANTASY XI from updating if you reinstall the PlayOnline Viewer and FINAL FANTASY XI through Steam. This issue affects all Windows platforms.

To resolve the issue, please follow these steps:
    1. Before reinstalling PlayOnline Viewer and FINAL FANTASY XI from Steam go to:
    a. C:> Program Files (x86) > Steam > steamapps > common
    2. Delete the “ffxi” directory
    3. Start Steam
    4. Reinstall the PlayOnline Viewer and FINAL FANTASY XI
Basically the same thing is over at Steam's support too:

Raist seems to be on the right track for this one. Please try these suggestions and let us know if you are still having issues after that.
