Linkshell issues

I currently have a linkpearl for a shell but the leader no longer plays. It is possible in fact that the leader has cancelled their account or changed servers. If the leader has changed servers or has cancelled their account, would that cause the shell to break? In any of those cases, is there any way I can reclaim the linkshell name?

If you can equip the pearl, the linkshell isn't broken. If the shellholder quits or changes server, it won't break the linkshell. You can't re-use the linkshell name unless the linkshell is actually broken.
