It's not real, I mean, come on. FFXI is not a country with a value... (people DO give it value, but it does not have ACTUAL value) ((semantics argument inbound)).
How about me basing it off a decade of watching FFXI's economy ebb and flow and the reasons why? Comes from being a long-term crafter, my guess.

And yes, thanks to RMT's (rule-breaking) action the Gil actually has genuine value, despite being a virtual currency only good in FFXI. The Linden it isn't, but it's still exchanged for real currency, and in sufficient amounts that manipulating it's value and amounts results in quite real profits to said illegal groups who sell it to others. And yes, that means manipulating FFXI's in-game economy to attempt to make the rate of exchange for some shmuck's dollars better.

Nothing would make me happier than seeing everything sell-able (in all forms) be made unsellable... the unmitigated glee as everyone's head exploded would be indescribable. "ZOMG YOU RUINED A FAKE ECONOMY THE REPERCUSSIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!111111111111111111111"
As it'd neatly obliterate crafting as we know it and jam a big thick sandpaper-coated rod up the collective rear ends of folks doing R/M/E weaponry, I'm sure it'd make you happy. Without a method of commerce, nobody would be farming anything save for whatever directly benefits them- as there's no benefit to doing so. Good luck on getting your ninja tools, your prism powders, your quest items for gobbiebags, etc. etc...oh, and have fun getting items off the NPC vendors with no real source of income save repeatable quests.

Without an economy, the game would grind to a halt. Your naive quips on the situation are adorably ignorant. Stay classy, my friend.

Haven't used a single third-party program the entire time I've been on FFXI. That's a decade+ now. And I'd /dance if S-E started making very public examples of the folks who think using them is perfectly A-OK to walk through doors, fleehack, etc. etc.

I vote for having them stuck in a room with Jormy and eaten repeatedly until they're at minimum level on all jobs. It's a classic.

Very true. And prices were relatively lower at that point, as the small amount of Gil in circulation meant that Gil was worth more relative to the items it purchased.

And brain dead "Make gil easier to get" folks aside, anyone who followed the flow of RMT's gil-pumping influence as it's gone up and down in FFXI can see the difference as AH prices rise and fall to follow it.

They can't do what they did in the old days- block access AND pump prices up - but they can still hyperinflate the market given an engine to do so, and the more Gil in the system that isn't gil-sinked back via NPC's, the larger the amount of Gil people need to get anything from others. Since blinkers got taken out as a Gil-pump, I've seen prices on some high-volume items drop by a third or more. Less gil in the system = more purchasing power per Gil.

Additionally, it should be noted that just about everything you do in Seekers of Adoulin can land you a Skirmish entry item.

So that's another thing. (Though frankly, I'd love to see RMT accidentally flood the market with those and drop the price down to a more appropriate value, lol)

Somewhere in space... this could be happening right now.

You don't seem to have a real grasp of just how easy it is to make money on here.

On any given day (without giving any details) I (or anyone) can make over 3,000,000 without even touching dynamis, or crafting, or farming skirmish items.

Used to be that you don't really need gil much unless you are making Relic or Mythic. When Abyssea pretty much give you all of your rare/ex Empyrean plus 2 gears, and all of those rare/ex accessories. All you need is a group of friend to help you get your gears. And everyone get the same chance for the loot. Meeble also give you "points as currency". Would it be great where you don't need gils for your gears and spend your "various points" for your gears. So if you are actively doing the contents, you are rewarded, instead of just using your credit cards to purchase these gears....

Sure you can (not sarcastic). Heck, I can run around Qufim and pick up over 100K in AH stuff in a single cycle of punching undead in the face, too- and that's an hour or two, never mind a whole day, and me a mere 55 THF doing it vs. an experienced, well-geared character that can go in more places.

Simple as that. Whatever you can do, RMT can do constantly, more often, and better as far as Gil-generation is concerned. I know, you can park yourself in Abyssea and pop chests all day for dark rings and whatnot. And you've been playing long enough to know the cardinal rule that any money-making scheme you have shouldn't be told- I wouldn't even ask. But it's the normal rate of Gil going into the system there. That's the way it works, and you put time in and get Gil out.

That's unlike what we had with blinkers, where you could have one person with 18 characters being multiboxed, accumulating cruor left and right (plus the usual items and such), cashing it all in, and not sinking a bit of it. 24-7. Or for that matter, fishbots, or whatever Adoulin scammery they're up to now. Mindless pumping of Gil into the system without sinking a bit of it, nor with any time being "wasted" on play. I see you dropped about 750K over the last week on the AH alone. Plus whatever you might happen to have spent in direct player-to-player transactions/NPCs, of course. You build up Gil, you spend Gil.

That's entirely different from packs of mostly-automated accounts that are used solely to generate Gil and hand it over to others (for real money), 24/7/365.
