We would like to express our sincere condolence and pray for the loss of people by the Tohoku-Chihou-Taiheiyo-Oki Earthquake occurred on March 11, and would like to extend our deep sorrow to the people and their families suffering damage.

We would also like to make our deep apologies for the concerns and inconveniences caused due to the incident of Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station and the leakage of radioactive substances to the people living in the surrounding area of the power station, the people of Fukushima Prefecture, and broader society.
Currently, we are putting all our efforts to cease the situation becoming any worse, with the support from the national government, related ministries and government offices, and by closely cooperating with them.

Further, due to the serious damages caused to our nuclear power stations, thermal power stations and transmission systems, despite our efforts, to maintain stable supply of electricity has become impossible. As a result, we have regrettably decided to carry out planned blackouts, and we deeply apologize for all the inconveniences caused.
We are doing our utmost best to restore our facilities in order to be able to stably supply electricity as soon as possible. We apologize for the disruptions caused, and appreciate your cooperation and understanding in saving power and planned blackouts.

so no FFXI wont be running anytime soon in japan unless they relocate the servers do you want to play in stable net environment? or you don't care and want play with Disconnections every now and then?

If they are actually scheduled and not random, I would be fine with "set times" to log out. After all, the blackouts are only 3.5 hours long, and usually only once a day, since they are 12 hours ahead of me, chances are, I'd be asleep during said blackout.

As long as they shut down FFXI before the blackout peroid occurs then I'd be fine with FFXI being down for 3,5 hours per day.

If they kept FFXI on and a powercut happened they could be in for a world of troubles if their database server crashes and data is lost

I highly doubt a server farm like theirs has no redundant power supply in case of power outages... otherwise a thunderstorm could kill all the data.

I have read from several posters that the building the servers are in is not in an area subject to blackouts. Not sure how credible the information is though.

Makes sence considering most other businesses, including Sony and car manufacters are not subject to them i guess because businesses need the power or they'll make a huge loss.

i would take unstable power over nothing. Heck let us play for 6 hours a day say 4-10pm Est. & we would be fine with it.

They couldnt do that tho because it'd favour 1/3 of their playerbase, you cant make the NA's happy and piss off the EU and JP playerbase

click the "Map This" link and poke around their neighborhood a bit, and maybe you'll understand why they had to conserve power, regardless if they were dealing with blackouts or not....
