SoA and Steam

I have been reading a number of posts concerning Steam and I am somewhat confused. I purchased FFXI from Steam to include all expansions prior to SoA. I am purchasing the SoA digital download from Amazon. Will this be compatible with my Steam copy of the game or must I get the Ultimate FFXI from another source?

you can just buy a regular copy of SoA and install it- this should work without any issues.

The install path will (by default) be: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\ffxi\

Since steam doesn't provide the game updates for FFXI unlike most games, it should go off without a hitch.

Expansion should be purchasable for steam users but may not be immediately available at the time the expansion goes live, according to the news post above.

I can confirm that for users of the steam version, if you bought the expansion from amazon digital, the installer installs straight to your *ffxi* folder and the game updates after installation.

I must be doing something wrong then. I downloaded my purchase from Amazon and followed the "Install" procedures as outlined and it created a separate folder outside the path you show. It did not give me the option of choosing the location for instalation. Any clarrification s you can give me would be much appreciated. Thank You.

If your steam library is at some other location, then it (should) automatically install it wherever the game is. If not, your install information might be messed up and you'd need to reinstall the game.

Just a guess, but maybe its an issue with either the steam version of POL(install) or the downloadable POL from from square-enix site. If POL is installed inside the ffxi folder it should install correctly.

I almost did that too, now I know that I should wait for it to be officialy on steam front page, sry to hear that happend. Steam has some wierd coding that prevents tampering with games. One thought is maybe if you turn off the security feature, but then I wouldnt want to risk getting banned from CS and Team fortress servers for having data conflict with those and set off the cheat alert, banning your account from joining all those servers. I think its best to just wait.

Yes the Steam version is actually both a US and EU version, much differant then the regular install, I'm guessing the download that was purchased was the full install, game and all, which steam UI wont recogonize as its own.

Since the expansion isnt a update like the abyssea add-ons were, I'm finding it hard to try buying another version outside of steam. I think if you want it downloaded from steam and backed up on steam, I strongly suggest just waiting for it another week or two.

I bought it from Steam a while back, and I bought SoA from SE and haven't had an issue. You'll be fine, you don't have to wait....
