Perhaps you misunderstand the difference between SE and POL accounts. You see, they are different characters who can be logged in at the same time, they pay full membership prices for both accounts
No, I understand the differences perfectly. However, a single SE account is still only intended for use by one person.

If they simply kept their POL accounts on individual SE accounts, they wouldn't have had this problem.
