Its already been discussed. They said they wouldn't make a ps3 version of the game because the coding between the ps2 and ps3 are so different it would be like building a new game from scratch. They also said they would rather create a brand new game which is how we got 14 in the first place (this interview was when ps3 was first released). They were able to easily port the pc version to 360 because the coding of windows and xbox aren't that different.
Also: some of us are already playing FFXI on a PS3, but won't be for much longer since they're not releasing the PS2 version of Adoulin outside of Japan.

Different games are written in different ways, making them differently capable of being retooled for the new platform. It's similar to the problem the Xbox 360 has with backwards compatibility: many discs work fine, and many games are now available as downloads, but I still can't play Microsoft's own MechAssault on the 360 (and yet MechAssault 2 works fine).
The original PS3's were "backwards-compatible" because they all but literally had a PS2 Slim soldered onto them like some sort of Frankenstein's console.

Games are fast to port because a very big part of making a game is making assets. A PS3 version of FF11 would reuse all 3D models, all music, all audio effects, all textures from the PS2 version. The biggest part of making a PS3 version is adjusting the game's code so that it will run adequately on the PS3. They managed to do this in the PC version and 360 version, even if both those platforms also are very different from the PS2.
I think the real issue lies in having to continuously support yet another platform, seeing as they'd have another client they'd need to perform testing on and fix bugs in, in addition to PS2, PC and 360. Maybe they'd be more likely to do it if they cut support for the PS2, but that's never going to happen.
It is not similar to how backwards compatibility works/worked on PS3 and the 360, because this involves running code compiled for a different CPU on the new console, while ports involve recompiling the code to get machine code that runs natively on the new console's CPU.

I don't really know what's involved in all that I was just stating what I read in an interview. And before anyone asks no I will not go search for it for you it was a 6 year old interview and I don't even remember where I saw it. All I remember is they were showing off the tech demo for xiv at the time and pretty sure it was the first official confirmation of xiv's development.
It is all new coding to port it to ps3 but it's not incredibly hard to do, they could if they wanted to quite easily. But then they'd have to alpha test it, beta test, and make sure all bugs/glitches are ironed out before release and quite simply, why would they? FFXI is a very old game now and what you're essentially asking for is FFXIV. I know there's slightly different game mechanics in FFXIV and we would lose all our well earned achievements in FFXI but it's practically FFXI for the PS3.
I'd like to see SE give new players items on FFXIV based on what they have on FFXI. Just to make it so that it doesn't seem like you've wasted so much time on XI. But then kinda knew we were wasting our time anyway, because it's only a game and nothing lasts forever in a game, especially one as old as XI.
you know,
if Sony would just allow them to do it they could just use the emulation engine that was released in some of the editions of PS3 and make it so only POL/FFXI would run off of it, its not like the way to do it doesn't exist,
they just don't want to remake the whole game for the PS3 and I can understand that part but since the emulation engine that allows PS2 games to run does exist Sony should let some companies use it, they are being incredibly greedy not doing so, as for Seekers being released on PS2 anywhere but Japan, I don't see that happening unless SE strikes a deal with Sony to use that Emulation Engine, but even then you would end up running into the PS2 limitations(not that there are really that many) that end up giving us some issues
Try to have fun or it isn't worth playing
While the 80 GB model (and a few others) used "software emulation," it was still running on a different motherboard from the Slim and Eben Moar Slim models. In redesigning the PS3 (twice), they may have sacrificed compatibility with that particular piece of software. All Sony was concerned with was compatibility with software written with the official PS3 SDK's.
I get the feeling that if the software used on the 80 GB really was a "one size fits all" model that we'd see a lot more PS2 titles available for download than we do today. There are more than a few big-name, Sony-published PS2 titles that are still missing from that particular catalog.
FGSFDSas for Seekers being released on PS2 anywhere but Japan, I don't see that happening unless SE strikes a deal with Sony to use that Emulation Engine
For the umpteenth time, "end of production" does not mean "end of support from Sony." The PS2 is still being treated as a current offering in Sony literature, in North America as well as Japan. This is S-E saying "No export for j00!" just like they're doing with the PC DVD of UCSE, nothing more and nothing less.
