    So, after six years, am back but I'm curious about something...

    ...and that something, honestly, is gil making for lower levels.

    I see that they added the ability to solo and get xp nicely enough however I'm somewhat at the point where I'm still not making enough gil to keep up with gear. So are the basics of auction selling still the current form of gil making? Any tips for a newly returned player on how to make enough gil to keep up with gear demands?

    Also, I'm looking to probably level War to 99. I hear SAM and DNC are the subjobs of choice however when I had left, NIN was great for dual wield. Why the switch? Or is there some website that specifies about WAR itself? Any sources of info would be great.

    /NIN was never that great, but after SE buffed two-handed weapons a few years ago it became completely negligible for WAR. Especially with the release of great weapon skills like Resolution and Ukko's Fury (or situationally Fell Cleave), two-handed weapons dominate anything comparable for any job that can use them.

    /DNC is not very useful on WAR at all. It used to be acceptable for campaign battles, but anything other than than that it will not be enough healing to keep up with a damage taking WAR's requirements. Possibly in Abyssea, in conjunction with some Regen Atma and fulltiming your PDT set, but usually when you're in there you'll have some sort of healer with or around you.

    /SAM is the only subjob that really makes sense on WAR, as it offers a great boost for two-handers with Hasso, as well as higher Store TP, Meditate, Zanshin and Sekkanoki.

    As for making money, there's hardly any options for low level players to make a decent income that doesn't involve selling cheap and slow-selling things they get in EXP parties on the auction house. My best advice to you is to be conservative with gear expenditures. WAR is an extremely cheap job, because it requires only up to date weapons for whatever level they sync to in GoV parties, so it's likely you'll only need a handful of weapons until the high levels. Gear is pretty much irrelevant until the 70s, because there's simply not much before then that will benefit you much. However, it does help making you look less gimpy, which is something others like to see because they don't know how useless the armor really is.

    Good to know, thanks. Any other information is appreciated, btw. Am happy to have come back but I went and spent the money I made out of the couple of Field Training rewards on a one hander thinking it's still logical to train with that. Damnit. I know better, now.

    Honestly, you won't keep up with the rate of exp gain if you party your way to the top.

    You may do better sticking your nose into a dungeon area and doing GoV's instead- don't level in outdoor areas unless you have to, even at the lowest levels of a job. Dangruf Wadi was pretty darn good for this. Start slapping monsters around and let the grounds rewards do most of the actual xp gain while your prowess ratchets up and you pop treasure coffers. 20k from an adman ore after guessing a combination isn't a bad feeling at all, especially when you're also picking on monsters with stackables to AH off. Wild onions (through the teens off Goblin Thugs), animal glue (to mid 20's) off Ambushers are 20-30Kish a stack on Ragnarok. Since GoV prowess can give Treasure Hunter or increased casket drops, and even blue caskets drop more potent buffs in dungeons than outdoor areas...you're winning in the money game staying inside. There's similar dungeon areas for all three nations, you've just gotta know where to go and stick to em- the towers near Windurst, the Wadi near Bastok, and the Tomb near San d'Oria. Build up some scratch, take a few levels doing GoV's in Gusgen in a party to snag a magicked skull and then you can slap around damselflies/clippers at 30ish if you want to solo your subjob items without trouble, respectably geared in the process.

    FoV's are decent, but GoV's blow them away between the better casket rewards in those areas and often the more concentrated mob populations. Oh, and the occasional honest to goodness treasure chest- but a lot of the old chest spawns are now in areas with mobs that would aggro a 99. Sheesh!
