Possible solution regarding PS2 Hard Drive limitations

Problem: While listening to the latest episode of the podcast Limit Break Radio, it was mentioned that the PS2's maximum hard drive space will forever limit the potential development of Final Fantasy XI.

One host mentioned the idea of removing outdated or unpopular features (such as chocobo racing) from the game to make room for potential new updates. However, that would understandably upset those who enjoy those features, regardless of how few they are.

Solution: Create a list of optional features to be installed or uninstalled at the user's discretion. This could be done via a menu that appears during install (and can be accessed at later times as well) that looks something like this:

Please select the features you would like installed:

[x] Rise of The Zilart expansion
    [x] Chains of Promathia expansion
[x] Treasures of Aht Urhgan expansion
[ ] Wings of The Goddess expansion
    [x] A Crystalline Prophecy add-on scenario
    [ ] A Moogle Kupo d'Etat add-on scenario
    [x] A Shantotto Accession add-on scenario
    [ ] Vision of Abyssea add-on scenario
    [ ] Scars of Abyssea add-on scenario
[x] Heroes of Abyssea add-on scenario
    [x] Chocobo Raising
    [ ] Chocobo Racing
    [x] Dynamis
    [ ] Assault
    [x] Ballista
    [ ] Brenner
    [ ] Garrison
    [x] Pankration
I'm sure there are countless other examples of optional features, and some of the above may not be possible to be installed/uninstalled, but they serve as examples of this potential idea.

For new players who are unfamiliar with these options, a default "use suggested settings" could be selected, which would include the most popular features. This wouldn't have to be PS2 exclusive either, as PC and Xbox 360 players would also appreciate the option to conserve their hard drive space.

I would love to hear what others in the community, as well as the development team think of this idea!

I dont know if it would actually help but who knows maybe it would. It would be lots better than deleting parts of the game for everyone.
The real answer in the long run is just to phase out ps2's. In truth they probably already are being since they hang on a number of things already.

i think every single expansion requires another expansion just to function, they're all kind of intwined.

    Hmm.. I see the potential.

It does put a limit on PS2 players not experienced by others tho.
A PC user for example, could have everything loaded, plus anything new, where as a PS2 user would have pick and choose.

Since SE would probably want to maintain "balance" I dont think they would go for it. Still, a good idea IMO.

Don't know why ppl keep creating new thread on PS2 limitations to do with HDD 1st off the HDD is not the main problem its the memory which nothing can be done about. 2nd If you feel you need a bigger HDD not that hard to remove old one and put new one in. I already replaced the original 40gig HDD with a 80gig,all you have to have is the utility disk that came with the original HDD and FFXI game so you can format new HDD to PS2 standards

Thanks for the info. I don't play on one, so I honestly don't know what the limitations are.
