I hope that this might help resolve the crashing that many people seem to be experiencing. Here are the details of my experience over the past 24 hours:
Platform: XBox 360 250GB black version
Internet: Comcast >> Motorola SB6120 >> Asus RT-N66U >> Xbox (all Cat5)
Main Character: Naatdog, Carbuncle
After the Sept. 24th update I played for about three hours with no issues. I then selected the "Shut Down" option on my main character while in the Jueno Mog house. The screen went black but never progressed to the XBox dashboard screen. All buttons on the controller and USB keyboard were non-responsive so I manually powered down the console.
About two hours later I logged in, got the usual "you did not exit properly" screen, and proceeded to log in. I started changing jobs and gear, and noticed that my Chef's Ring (Ring2 slot) was displaying improperly, as if a diagonal line had been drawn through it and only the upper-left half was showing. I selected that equipment slot to change rings. As soon as I selected the equipment slot, the music stopped, my moogle stopped spinning and everything froze. Again, all the buttons on the controller and keyboard were non-reponsive and I manually shut down the console.
I immediately restarted, went past the "you did not exit properly" screen, and logged in to one of my other characters. Everything seemed normal, so I logged out of that character and back to my main. The Chef's Ring appeared normally and I was able to change jobs and gear. I played for about an hour in Ranguemont Pass and then got warped to Jeuno. My fiend and I gathered a group for the Limit Break 10 BCNM and when I went into my mog house to change subjobs, everything froze again with the same symptoms. Again I forced shut down on the console.
I logged in for the third time, and everything seemed to be fine. I changed subjobs and gear, went to Qu'Bia arena, then to Waughroon Shrime for Royal Jelly BCNM, and then to Abyssea-Altepa for a couple Rani fights. Everything seemed fine. Before logging for the night I was sending items to one of my other characters, logged out and onto that character, and went to the Auction House in Port Sandy. I was browsing through the food >> Ingredients menu and when I clicked on the price history for Ruszor Meat, everything froze; music stopped, price history window was half-way open. At this point, I decided to force shutdown of the console and go to bed.
The morning of the 25th (GMT-5). I logged in and again got the message about failing to shut down properly. I proceeded to complete the transfer of items from the night before with no problems but after about 45 minutes, while in my mog house on my main character, everything froze again while accessing one of the inventory menus.
At this point I did not know that there was a known issue, so after forcing shutdown and relogging in, I selected the Check Files option for FFXI from the POL screen. The check found one damaged file and I went through the repair process and downloaded a patch.txt file. I proceeded into the game and played for about 45 minutes before trying to quit using the Shut Down option. Once again, the screen went black and never got to the XBox dashboard. I forced shutdown for what was now the fifth time.
During the day, I found out about the known issue and the emergency maintenance. This evening I logged in and played for several hours in Abyssea without incident. At the end of the night, I warped to Jeuno, entered my mog house and selected the Shut Down option to log off for the night. Once again, the screen went black and never reached the Xbox Dashboard, forcing me to manually power down the console.
Hopefully the feedback from users will help the development team find a resolution to this problem. I had thought that I would need to reinstall the software on my XBox but at this point I believe the problem lies in the September 24th update.
