    Incorrect PlayOnline ID or password.

I tried to reactive my account from a year ago. After going through what has honestly been the most frustrating Web experience I've ever had just to get so far as to post here, I can't even log in to the game.

I keep getting an error in the PlayOnline Viewer that states: "Incorrect PlayOnline ID or password." My PlayOnline ID and password are both correct. I checked it over and over. My Square Enix Account ID and password are both correct as well.

I also tried resetting my both my PlayOnline Password and my PlayOnline Mail Password via the Square Enix Account Management System. That didn't fix it. Finally, I submitted a ticket via their support system and I haven't heard anything back. Not even an automatic reply. It's been a week.

Would someone be able to tell me precisely what I need to do in order to play this game? As it stands, I had to pay $12.95 just so I could post on this board.

I would also like to know how to fix this. I'm assuming that I need to enter a Square Enix password, but there is no option for doing so in the Playonline viewer.

ok, I'll give this a shot.

First head over to the SE account management page and log in.
At the near bottom left, you should see a window that says Services and Options. Click the "Select Service" link and then the FFXI link that appears next. This should take you to the screen that shows the POL accounts that are registered to your SE account. Get a pen and paper handy and take note of the POL ID that matches your character. Note that the ID should be 8 characters, 4 capital letters and 4 numbers. When finished click the options list button.

The next screen should show your characters along with the expansions you've registered ect. At the bottom you will see several options with the top being update playonline password. Click update and change your password to whatever you see fit and write it down near your note for the POL ID.

Now that you've done everything once again, with frustration I'm sure, exit out of your browser and launch your game.
On the first screen click on your login of choice and choose the delete option. If you only had one character your screen should now be blank. Pick the Add member option on the left and enter the required information, taking note of the capital letters for your POL ID. Your screen should look something like this:

Member Name - This can be anything you choose. Personally I pick my main characters name.
Playonline ID - Your pol id, take note again of the 4 capital letters and 4 numbers
Set password - 2 options, Not set and save. For me it is easier to use the save option. Otherwise you will be required to enter 2 passwords each time you log in.

Playonline Password - This option will highlight if you choose the save option from above. Carefully enter it in if you picked to do so.

Member Password - This is for extra security and is not required. It will prompt you to enter yet another password before logging in. Personally I do not use this.

Confirm Password - If you opt for using the member password this will highlight and you will need to enter it again to verify.

Square Enix ID - Your SE id that you use to log in to your account page.
One-Time Password - Again, 2 options Do Not Use and Use. If you have bought and registered a security token from SE and use it to log in to your management page online pick the Use option. Otherwise keep it at Do Not Use.

Once finished click the register button at the bottom and try logging into the game again.

Sorry for the long winded post, but I have had this happen more then once, especially when I change my POL password from the site. For some reason the log in for the game doesn't always like info changing once its saved and deleting and reentering everything has worked for me every time.

Good luck and hope that helps =)

Tried this twice, but it didn't work. I keep getting a message saying that one of three passwords is wrong (either the playonline pass, the Square Enix pass, or the one time pass.) I even tried logging in as a guest, but nothing works. Thx for trying though, it's more than the service reps have done.

update: It seems the login fails when the client checks the Square Enix ID and password. My ID is correct, but there is no visible way to enter the SE password. How did the devs screw up this badly?

you have to enter the SE password everytime...on the PC, it's on the same window as the one-time password (from the token). Need to double check you are putting the right info in the right fields.

When I was playing, my POL info was saved. First make sure that is in synch as laid out in the earlier instructional post. Save the password at the website, then save that in the local POL settings in game (not when you are loggin in, it's nested in your POL settings and you have the option to save it--else you have to enter this additional info with every login). It is CRUCIAL that you make sure the POL info is in synch between your game and the SE AM server--this is usually what trips people up.

Once you have the POL info saved in the game settings, it will be only asking for your SE AM credentials when you try to get in game. Your SE name can be saved, but NOT the SE password (even though the check box is there, it doesn't work). If you are using a token, the window that pops up will be asking for your SE AM password and your token key. Make sure you are putting in your SE AM password, then your token code.

NOTE: The code from your token is only active for a short time. If you take too long after retreiving the code from your token before actually logging in--there will be a mismatch and login will fail. This will happen periodically, even if you are very fast with the process. I had times where it took 3x before getting in cleanly....it's just screws with you on the timing sometimes.

Token codes should be valid for 20-30 minutes after generation. There has to be a window in case the clocks are slightly out of sync, due to the battery fading.

Actually, it generates a new code every 30 seconds--if you happen to poll it close to the end of the window, it can be invalid by the time you finish the login form.

After registering a Square Enix Account and purchasing the Square Enix Security Token, players can then assign the token to their PlayOnline ID(s). Using the token will generate a one-time password every 30 seconds for the account. Implementation of these new features is an extension of Square Enix’s commitment to continuous service for our customers

I'm astounded by the level of detail in this thread, great job you guys (RAIST & Caliana)! The key in something like this is making sure you've got all your ducks in a row. In the big picture here you may have 3 IDs and 5 passwords: PlayOnline ID & PW, Square Enix ID & PW, One Time Password, PlayOnline Email & PW, Member password. I suggest you get a notepad and write out each one of these so you know that you have each one and what it is. If you heeded the directions in this thread with no luck and you're sure you've got all the right information you may want to make sure you've got the latest (correct region) PlayOnline Viewer. If all else fails, head over to the Square Enix support site and one of the representatives can walk you through the setup and take care of any other issues that might be hindering the account.

As much as I hate the overcomplicated login process, this is actually as straightforward as it can get.
    • Member Name: Enter anything here. This name will never be seen anyone else, it's just to distinguish between the locally saved accounts.
    • PlayOnline ID: Eight characters, four letters, four digits. It's the one that was randomly generated for you.
    • Set Password: If this is changed to "Save" (default is "Not set"), you will not need to enter the password every time you log in. However, to my knowledge this is not possible to not set this anymore when using an SE account anymore, which is mandatory, so I don't know why this option still exists. Maybe for trial accounts? Not sure, maybe someone else knows.
    • PlayOnline Password: You can only enter this if you changed the above to "Save". If not you'll be prompted to enter it when you log in.
    • Member Password: This is only used locally and has nothing at all to do with POL, FFXI or anything else. It's only to stop vile house mates to log in as you and draw cock pictures on your mog house walls. If you don't have anyone like that, I strongly recommend not using this, as it only leads to confusion. To unset a member password, you will need to go to the settings again and delete what's currently in there. Just save the settings with this blank. If you forgot your member password, you'll probably need to reinstall the POL client.
    • Square Enix ID: This is the name of your SE account, whatever you chose it to be. This is your umbrella account, one SE account can contain several POL accounts, and each POL account can contain several characters. This is what you log in to the SE Account Management site with.
    • One-Time Password: The password displayed on the security token. Obviously it also can't be set permanently but has to be entered every time it's asked of you when you log in. To disable it, just set it to "Do Not Use" (default, otherwise select "Use".

There is no way to save the SE password, you enter that every time you log in. It's the same password you use at SE the Account Management site. When you then click on "Log In", you will need to enter your SE password only (because the POL password had to be saved in the settings), and possibly the one-time password from the security token, if you use that.
